So as long as Peyton, Jake, AND Lucas are all still in the picture... Lucas will always be Peytons #1 guy. Maybe he and Peyton would have tried again since her and Luke broke up (for good it seemed). But instead Peyton met Julian. Anyhow, all signs would have pointed to Leyton by the end of season 5 whether Jake was there or not. I think that if he woulda stayed he woulda stirred things up at the most.
