I don't think it's possible to say "do you think he WOULD'VE, or what if..?" and stuff.

LUCAS is written to make the actions he made, it's impossible to say what he "would have" done if he didn't do what he did.

I think Brucas fans should be grateful to Mark.
I'll explain why. Mark stated that Leyton were meant from the pilot. Lucas had a crush on Peyton for years but when she pushed him away Brucas showed up. In Lucas words, he hide after Brooke & didn't have feelings for her in S1. So how could Lucas discover he loved Brooke if he never loved her in S1?
IMO, without Brooke, Leyton would have been like Naley, always together since S1 & NOTHING could come between them. Mark gave Brucas fan S2 & S3 to enjoy your couple so they should be grateful. Leyton never separated on their free will. In S1, Peyton gave up for Brooke's sake & in S5 Lucas misunderstood Peyton's word of Someday and he gave up when he didn;t see her at the book launch.
