Does anyone know how Whitey got his nickname?

I was watching a rerun of one of the earlier seasons, and I realized I have no clue why he got the nickname! Anyone know?

It was explained that Coach Durham recieved the nickname "Whitey" after his all-white high school basketball team played an all-black team for the first time. After the two teams had played each other, they decided to have a mixed match in which one of the black captains said "I'll take 'Whitey'."
