Once Upon A Time Neal and Rumple sharing a body

When Rumplestiltskin is in control, he is very aware of Neal's presence in his head, but when Neal takes over their shared body, he has no idea his father is alive, or even that they are sharing a body. It's almost like when Neal takes over, Rumple completely fades from existence. Neal had no idea he was there. What The Hell?

I actually think it's because Rumple was aware and knew what he was doing when he absorbed Neal to try to save him, so he remembered whenever he was conscious in their shared body but their minds were so mixed he couldn't communicate it. Neal had been dead/dying and unconscious at the time, so he wouldn't know.
