Niall Horan Opens Up About The Abuse He Gets From So-Called One Direction Fans

\'They have drowned my phone in messages, keeping me awake at night\'

Being a member of one of the most popular music groups on the planet can have its drawbacks, as Niall Horan has discovered.

The One Direction singer posted a series of tweets illuminating the abuse he’s been getting from a group of fans who came upon his personal cell phone number.

“For the last two weeks I’ve been receiving messages off a group of fans,” wrote Horan. “They have drowned my phone in messages, keeping me awake at night.”

These haven’t exactly been loving messages, either: “They have been nothing but abusive. Saying things you wouldn’t even believe about me and my family. And saying the worst things ever about my little nephew.”

Relationships between celebrities and fans can easily become strained or even toxic, especially when social media allows the illusion of total access to stars’s daily lives. Horan is hardly the first pop star to suffer from unwanted fan attention; recently, Justin Bieber cut off fans from meet-and-greets for the sake of his mental health.

Being the object of so much attention can be dehumanizing, but Horan insists that he’s taking it in stride. He just wanted to get the word out about the abuse that can come with having such a public platform.
