OH, and by the way. I fooled you. Its Helen McCrory in both pictures. I am really ashamed at how some of you welcome a new cast memeber. Every person who reads the series has a different picture. I expected this on a stupid movie blog. But not a fansite.
I don't like Narcissa's movie look, but I have nothing against Helen McCrory. She's an attractive woman and a fine actress, I just think she looks wrong for the role.
Still, I felt most wrong wasn't the fault of casting, but of the styling. Like that brown streak in the blonde hair. What is the point of that? I understand making changes from book descriptions when it's a simple oversight or makes things easier or more 'movie' looking, but that brown streak is so pointless, it felt like the stylists were going out of their way to make her look wrong. You can't expect a movie character to be just like you pictured, but I don't think it's too much to ask that they not make silly changes just for the sake of it.
That's why I don't mind when people do things like use fanart instead of official pictures of Narcissa. They're fans primarily of the book character, and as the movie version has visual inaccuracies I don't mind people using fanart/manips they feel are more accurate to the character they're a fan of.
The only part of people's annoyance with the movie version's looks I disagree with are people who got rude about Helen McCrory's appearance. I felt that was out of line, and I think she is attractive. Even though she looks nothing like I picture the character, I still think visually her casting could've been fine if a better job of styling the character had been done (which is not Helen McCrory's fault, and the styling would've been the same whoever was cast). I also think some people rushed to judge her portrayal of the character based just on the look, just because the styling was off doesn't mean people shouldn't be fair when judging the acting. I think Helen Mcrory's a good actress, and I think the majority of the look issues were styling problems not a problem with her.
Well it still is really shallow. I mean we will never know the reason why the makeup department did what it did, and this being the " Narcissa Malfoy" spot it should repectfully have Helen on top. People called her old and ugly then said Naomi Watts or Nicole Kidman should have done it but guess what they are the same age as her. I just thought it was very disrespectful and I still do. Yes, her appearance isnt quite what I had in mind, but it grew on me and after seeing her in HBP I thought she did a wonderful job playing Dracos mother. She isnt supposed to look like a young 20 something her son is 17.
I still don't think it's shallow, judging the visual side of the movies is part of the fun for some. It's one of the interesting things about a story that's interpreted into a different medium. If you want people to be passionate enough fans to care about the look of the movies (which I'm sure they do, otherwise all the visual work they put in would go unappreciated) you take the good with the bad. Sometimes fans will be happy, sometimes not. When it comes to the look of the movies for every one quibble I hear, I hear five compliments. While things like the acting and writing are more important, the look of a movie is still something you take into account when judging it, especially a movie based on a pre-existing world, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
I don't think having an opinion about the look of things in the movie (be it a positive or negative one) is bad. It's just part of what some fans enjoy.
The only thing I think is wrong is when people are rude or disrespectful about the cast/crew personally rather than judging the work, and I agree I found the people who insulted Helen McCrory's looks by calling her old/unnattractive annoying and out of line. I think she did a good job, and is an attractive actress.
When it comes to whose image should be used in this spot's icon/banner personally I think members of this spot should meet in the middle, and use a picture of Helen McCrory, but one altered to fit the book description (like her image in the 'no' option of this pick) That way we're using the movie actress, but people wont feel it looks too inaccurate to the books. Everyone wins.
Yes, I think people are too critical of Helen as Narcissa. I think she looks really classy and I like the hair. It makes her look non-
mugglish, IMO. lol
Regarding the comment that she looks too old, Narcissa is supposed to be 42 and Lucius 43. Helen is 5 years younger than Jason.
Also, don't forget that she's a mother of a 17-year-old.
I really, really like Helen as Mrs. Malfoy! I think she did a great job on both movies! Narcissa looks really elegant, sophisticated, aristocratic. Overall fitting for a rich, married woman with a teenage child in her forties. :)
A hundred times YES!
Why the -wizard swear here- would we care how she looks like?
And for your information,Helen is perfect for Narcissa,if you can't deal with it it's not my problem.
Morons.
yes we ARE being shallow....but the outside look is an important part for defining a character and even more if it's a character that appears so little in the movies.
Well I still think she's different from what she was described in the books BUT I like her performance
Yes, it seems quite unfair to joke about her hair all the time.
Bellatrix also has weird hair which was described different in the book....but she's not being critisized.
I just had to get used to the thought of having my own pictures of the characters from the description in the books but also the "BETA-Version", the "movie"-characters
It took me some time to get used to it because I pictured them (right THEM, not only Narcissa) to look different for so many years. Ten years passed between reading the fourth book and watching the first movie Narcissa appeared in....sure that you refuse to part with the image you had in your mind at first for sooo long
I did think of Narcissa being young, but yes, I believe we are being a little shallow. I've heard of people not liking the character at all because of her looks. Personally, I thought she was pretty. Besides, the changed her looks in the next two movies so people don't have to worry anymore.
