"Okay, so I looked up Owl City and on Wikipedia it is expressed by the singer that he has insomnia which is this weird sleep disorder thing that makes you stay up though you want to sleep or vice-versa. That being said, the reason of the song is quite simple, much like poetry the song may seem like nothing, but it means so much more than anyone would have ever thought possible. It is basically trying to express his insomnia.

The song is talking about leaving childhood behind and embracing adulthood. It is also about his dreams.
The fireflies that the author talks about in the beginning of the song represent the overwhelming amount of opportunities in his life that he is constantly analyzing. When he uses the metaphor of 'sleep' he is actually referring to the time that he could be taking advantage of the opportunities when, in fact, he is sitting back and relaxing as they all kind of pass him by. He talks about being too tired to fall asleep which takes the meaning of his stress thinking about all the things he is missing out on.
By putting some of the lightening bugs away, which are the same as fireflies, he is simply taking note of how to accomplish these things later on if need be. Some of these dreams he has to let go of because in the future they will no longer be attainable. In case his life takes a weird turn ('gets real bizzare'), he will have this jar of opportunities, or "bugs", to return to.
The Moral of the song is take advantage of opportunities (fireflies) you have, but time goes fast, so you can't acheive everything, but you can make the most of knowing what's out there. So do what you can, but don't lose sleep over it.
I believe that in order to understand this song you must of have at some time in your life enjoyed the fruits of nature!!!!! Myself and my wife both agree that you definitely must be stoned in order to understand this song, and not only that, were not even stoned and it makes perfect sense....Obviously other people have no understanding of misty eyes, bizarre dreams or the fact that the world moves slowly because everything is never how it seems when your high. When your stoned you analyze things more in depth. So let him chase fireflies and dance with them because the song is on point, all done in the comfort of his room..... atleast he didn't melt like in the Above the Influence commercials!
(Makes you think who's really high in those commercials)

This is what I am thinking. 'Cause people don't have to be professionals to edit Wikipedia.
It's about growing up.

Catching fireflies = Being a kid.

I like to make myself believe, that planet earth
turns, slowly = Wanting to stay a kid for longer.

And that's why there are all the toys in the music video.

And the saying goodbye to the fireflies = growing up and moving on and becoming an adult.

Still keeps some in a jar = He's still got some kid in him.
of course I am not necessarily right."
