I'm attracted to certain kinds of movies- fantasy, sci fi, action, and period films- so that's usually the first thing I look at. After that it's really up to the trailer- if it looks good I'll give it a try. There are a few actors that I'll watch whatever they're in (unless it's horror XP) and a few directors that I'll watch whatever they direct (unless it's horror XPP).

I usually base what I choose on either the director or the genre. I don't look for actors much, but I will never miss a Matt Damon movie. :D

I like pretty much all genres so I don't mind what genre it is.
I try not to go by directors/actors too much because I may or may not like the movie regardless of who's in it/directed it.
Rating's are useless IMO XD
The last time a friend recommended a movie and consequently dragged me along to see, I regretted it.
So, it all lies in the trailer...if it looks interesting, I'll watch it. =]

Whose starring and the trailer probably. There are a few of directors that I really love like Baz Luhrmann, Steven Spielberg and Tim Burton. So when they're directing the film, I'm there as well.

If the trailer is interesting then I'll watch it. I don't usually watch a movie just because of who is in it, but there are some exceptions, like Johnny Depp, for example. Although I may be more likely to watch something if it's a certain genre, like horror for example, I'll watch pretty much any genre if the movie looks interesting enough from the trailer.

I always check Rotten Tomatoes first for most movies.

Typically, I choose based on trailers. It's what sparks my interest in a movie.

But that doesn't always help. I saw the Man Who Cried because it had Johnny Depp, Cate Blanchett and a few other respectable actors and it was complete trash. The best part was when Johnny Depp cried because we were waiting for it for so long.

I do pick based on who is in it ONLY if it is not a horror movie. Horror, which is my favorite genre, is the main deciding factor. But if I like an actor/actress (like Jennifer Love Hewitt for example, since she doesn't do a lot of horror) I will see a movie just for them.

Once i've seen all of the movies of one of my favorite directors i usually find out what directors they like and work from there.

To be honest, I almost NEVER ask my friends for suggestions for films because we have completely different tastes. Plus, I've already learned that all the films they think are awesome, I think they suck. So I really don't ask my friends for suggestions.
