I've only seen the 60s one, so I can't comment...Yet I love the 60s one and I think it's so bizarre that the 90s one placed the story in a modern setting but still used Shakespeare's antique dialogue.

Definitely. It has much more of the spirit of Shakespeare's original story, and I really feel like I'm watching Romeo and Juliet. I honestly can't take the 1996 version seriously, with it being set it modern times, and them speaking in the original text.
