Mortal Instruments Question

*Spoilers* Contiunity Questions About TMI and TID

I read TID originally abut a month or so before Clockwork Princess came out without knowing at all that there was a related series. I saw the Clockwork Prince cover in a bookstore and got interested. After reading them I had to have more, tears, laughs, and tension? YES PLEASE. Anyways I started reading City of Bones excitedly because I couldn't wait to see the urban fantasy take on this world. But I immediately found that continuity problems bogged me down. I.e. women only just started getting "trained as a matter of course", and drinking from the mortal cup only works on children. There are other smaller inconsistencies that are more easily overlooked as things that can be changed in 150 years but those two seem like pretty major historical facts that are wrong or at least misunderstood. I keep stopping after becoming frustrated. Did anyone else have this issue? Is there some great reconciliation later since I know now TMI started before and finished being released after TID? Am I just being picky and crazy? I love the stories I just have a detail oriented brain.

From what I remember, drinking from the Mortal Cup does work on adults too, but its more likely to fail and poison the human instead if he or she is older.

I can't remember where in TMI it mentions that women were/weren't trained historically. But it does mention in TID that although women at that time did train, most didn't actually fight on raids. Is that the difference you're questioning there?
