The synopsis of the film reads:
Brave is set in the mystical Scottish Highlands, where Mérida is the princess of a kingdom ruled by King Fergus and Queen Elinor. An unruly daughter and an accomplished archer, Mérida one day defies a sacred custom of the land and inadvertently brings turmoil to the kingdom. In an attempt to set things right, Mérida seeks out an eccentric old Wise Woman and is granted an ill-fated wish. Also figuring into Mérida’s quest — and serving as comic relief — are the kingdom’s three lords: the enormous Lord MacGuffin, the surly Lord Macintosh, and the disagreeable Lord Dingwall.

[edit]Development

This film is Pixar's first fairy tale. Brenda Chapman considers it as a fairy tale in the tradition of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm.[2] Chapman conceived the project and was announced as the director of the film, making her Pixar's first female director,[3] but on October 2010 she was replaced by Mark Andrews. Andrews has now been confirmed as the director of the film and Chapman as the co-director.
The film was initially set for release on June 15, 2012 but was later changed to June 22, 2012.[4]
Mérida is the first female protagonist in a Pixar film.[1] She is expected to join the Disney Princess franchise, making her the first Disney Princess to come from Pixar, as well as Disney's first CGI princess after Rapunzel from Tangled went to being an unofficial princess. Mérida was originally to be voiced by Reese Witherspoon, but due to scheduling conflicts she was replaced by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald.[1]
