Chloe rolled her eyes. "Riley, this certificate represents promptness, class participation, and good work habits. If I keep this up, I'm going to get a reputation!" "Oh, yeah, I can see it now," Riley joked. "Written on the wall in the boys' locker room: For a good example, call Chloe." "Real funny," Chloe moaned. "Look--you have a free period now. Come eat with me. I need moral support. "Okay," Riley agreed. "I don't have to study for a test. Besides, we can talk about the party. They headed down to the cafeteria, quickly bought their lunch, and found a seat.
"Good citizen award," Chloe muttered, shaking her head. Her shoulders slumped as she sipped miserably from her carton of lemonade. "Hey, lighten up," Riley said. "What's the big deal? I mean, Travis probably already forgot about it by now."
"I'm positive," Riley said. "Now let's talk about something really important--like the party." Before Chloe could reply, Mr. Conner's voice came over the P.A. system. "Attention students," he said. "I'd like everyone to put their hands together for Chloe Carlson, who has once again won the important Good Citizen Award!"
"Oooohh!" a bunch of kids at a nearby table chanted, making fun of her. Chloe wanted to hide. Not only did Travis think the award was lame, so did the whole school! "I hope everyone learns something from Chloe's fine example," Mr. Conner went on. Half the people in the cafeteria broke out laughing.
"Nice to be so popular--with the vice principal!" a guy behind Chloe joked. "Ugh!" Chloe groaned, hiding her face in her hands. "I feel like I'm in third grade again!" "Forget about it," Riley said. "Let's talk about the party." "Oh, no!" I just realized something horrible." Chloe spread her fingers and peeked out, glancing around the cafeteria. "Is Travis eating inside or out today? Did he hear the announcement?" she asked. "Did he see everyone laughing at me? Is he laughing? Riley checked out the cafeteria and nodded. "He's sitting with Kyle and Cameron. Inside."
