Southern California, we have a problem. Big-time. Mary-Kate Olsen stood in the center of her bedroom, hands on her hips, her bright blue eyes doing a quick survey as she turned her head from side to side. At least she thought she was in the center of her room. It was kind of hard to tell, since the room itself was pretty much buried under all her... There was really only one word for it. Stuff, she thought. Not that that should be mistaken for a dis. It was all really great stuff. The trouble was, its overall greatness was part of the problem. Mary-Kate and her sister, Ashley, were leaving for college on the east coast first thing in the morning. Superorganized Ashley was already packed-had been for days. But Mary-Kate was still struggling after a solid week of attempting] to pack. What we have here is a heart-brain failure to communicate, she decided as she climbed over two open suitcases, half a dozen piles of sweaters, and a stack of CDs on her way to the bed. She sat down with a whoosh and hugged the pillow her mom had given her for her last birthday to her chest. Her brain kept downloading useful information about what not to pack,...

MARY-KATE
Singular Sensation

In a life already packed with surprising twists and tabloids-ready turns; Mary-Kate Olsen has done what many never imagined possible: fashioned herself a serious designer and forged an identity all her own.

Hanging out with Mary-Kate Olsen is a little bit like wandering through a Venetian palazzo: Everything is exquisite and fragile and slightly haunted, and you keep thinking the whole thing is going to sink to the bottom of the sea any minute, but somehow it never does.
"We're like two little young old women who have been through a lot," says Mary-Kate, referring to herself and her twin sister, Ashley, with whom she built the billion-dollars tween entertainment-and-lifestyle empire Dualstar, and with whom she now designs the luxurious clothing line The Row. "We're turning 24 on Sunday, and I said to Ash, 'Can you believe we're turning 48?'" Perched on a black sofa in Dualstar's sunny loft of offices in Chelsea in New York City, Mary-Kate smiles sadly and shrugs. "We've been working since we were 9 months old. That's the way we feel."

Inside Their Strange World

They Built An Empire as Child Stars-then They Grew Up. Now, at 21 with Money to Burn, the Olsen Sisters Are Living in the Fast Lane-and Still Clinging to Each Other.

Even for die-hard New York City clubbers, it's a late night. But although it's nearly dawn, Mary-Kate Olsen is still going strong. The 21-year-old actress has been on her feet for hours at Manhattan hot spot Beatrice Inn, celebrating Valentine's Day with her boyfriend, artist Nate Lowman, 29, drinking Stella Artois beers and vodka and sodas, chain-smoking Marlboro Reds and, every once in a while, ducking behind a booth with pals for privacy. She's ordered her three bodyguards to give her space, so they keep their distance, waiting for the night to end. Only it doesn't. After the bar closes at 4:30 a.m., Mary-Kate spends an hour in an upstairs lounge before heading to another club, telling pals, "We're going to keep partying."

Not so long ago, the names Mary-Kate and Ashley were synonymous with good clean fun. But these days the Olsens are arguably better known for burning the candle at both ends. Fixtures at exclusive...

LIFE IS BUT A DREAM
Mary-Kate Olsen, exclusively on nylonmag.com!

Despite the fact that she can't seem to avoid being in the tabloids, Mary-Kate Olsen has always been an intensely private person. Meet an inadvertent fashion icon:

"It's funny, recently I've done a few interviews where I've totally been myself and they couldn't get past the fact that I wore heels. Yes, I'm wearing heels! Headline: Wearing Heels, once again. I'm short; I like to wear heels; it makes my legs look longer (laughs). Sorry!" - Mary-Kate Olsen, exclusively on nylonmag.com.

Mary-Kate Olsen

Olsen & Olsen
The Secrest Behind The Sister Act

Never judge a book by its cover: Mary-Kate en Ashley (22) zijn - shocking news! We'll try.

MODERN ICON

She is an actress, a designer and a fashion icon. Luke Crisell meets the very private Mary-Kate Olsen to discover what influences her unique sense of style.

The second-oldest cemetery in Manhattan is a small, well-maintained affair: the names of those interred here are inscribed on tablets lining the walls. Hazelnut trees dot the lawn. Once an undistinguished plot of land on the Lower East Side, the graveyard now abuts the tiled patio of a boutique hotel where Mary-Kate Olsen has decided we should meet. "I remember this place used to be so cool", she says, raising her eyes to the cloudless sky. But then they started letting everyone come here. She goes to take a third cigarette from the Marlboro Red packet on the table but it's empty. She takes it, clearly frustrated, and picks up the butt of the last one, which seems to placate her. Somebody actually threatened to throw a drink in my face not too long ago when I was sitting here with two friends. It was some drunk guy who had been here since noon. However over-populated the hotel might be in the evening, now, at the beginning of a soporific afternoon, were alone. The patio is...

Mary-Kate Olsen - De Evil Twin

GIRLS INCORPORATED

Girls Incorporated

They are to tweens what Martha Stewart is to American homemakers: arbiters of all that is right and good and stylish. But Mary-Kate (far right) and Ashley Olsen, 15-year-old twins from San Fernando Valley, are also budding tycoons, blithely ensconced atop a cross-platform fashion-and-entertainment empire. Having infiltrated every medium known to girls aged 6 to 14, the Mary-Kate-and-Ashley brand is poised to generate $ 1 billion in revenue in 2002. The twins'clothing-and-accessories line, purveyed exclusively through Wal-Mart, is on pace to eclipse Kmart's Martha colossus. Their new television series, So Little Time, is one of four Olsen offerings currently on the air, including a Saturday-morning cartoon, recycled episodes of Two of a Kind, and reruns of the irresistibly hokey Full House, on which the then nine-month-old twins cut their acting-and actual-teeth. They have sold 24 million videos, host a heavily trafficked Web site, and play protagonists in best-selling books and video games. Then there's the freshly inked deal with AOL, the feature film in development, the in-the-works recording...

OLSEN TWINS TRY OUT MARTHA STEWART

Mary-Kate and Ashley unveil Wal-Mart line

Say goodbye to Martha Stewart; say hey to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. The Girls who got their start as actresses on the sitcom Full House as infants have since gone on to become the branding success story of the kids market, and they're only 15 years old. "We're excited to be launching our line of fashion, home and beauty products to Canadian girls," said Mary-Kate yesterday at the news conference to announce that the line will appear at Wal-Mart stores across Canada by Mid-February. She and sister Ashley finished each other's sentences and read from handwritten notes on a wrinkled piece of lined paper. The announcement suggests that the girls seem to be following the formula for global branding success pioneered by lifestyle diva Martha Stewart, who sells her line of home products at K-Mart. But can they do it? Stewart had a bigbusiness background when she started her mutlimedia career in the early '80s, while the Olsen twins are still working on their high-school diplomas. If their success in the entertainment industry is any indication, the girls stand to become...

From Full House To Full Bank Accounts

Olsen twins command billion-dollar empire

FIVE years ago, Mary-Kate and Ashley olsen were ending their run on the hit sitcom Full House, but today, the 14-year-old twins are Hollywood's hottest mini-moguls, with business ventures worth up to $100 million. Estimates place the tyke-coons' combined personal fortune at anywhere from $17 million to over $24 million.
"They have earned more than Macaulay Culkin and Shirley Temple combined, and they have saved more," says the girls' manager and lawyer, Robert Thorne, about the moppets who broke into show business in 1987 at 9 months old, sharing the part of precocious Michelle on Full House.
"We are a billion-dollar franchise that really comes down to some normal little girls."
While "billion" may be an exaggeration, the girls can bank on their successes:
♦ In 1990, Parachute Books sold 70,000 copies of a book based upon the character Michelle at $4 a piece. The publisher has since churned out 100 titles on Olsen themes and scheduled two new titles a month through 2001. Total sales have been estimated at $30 million.

Twice As Nice!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen play the mischief-making twins in Nickelodeon's Two Of A Kind. Funday caught up with the star sisters, when they visited the UK recently to film their new movie, Winning London.

Nickelodeon's Two Of A Kind is a popular show in this country, and its stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are fast becoming TV favourites. However, that's nothing compared with how famous the twins are in America!
During their recent trip to London, Mary-Kate and AShley relished the fact that they could hit the shops without being recognised everywhere they went. In America, it's a completely different story. More than 15,000 screaming fans turned up to see them at a recent movie premiere, and their dolls outsell Christina, Britney and even Barbie!
The 14-year-old twins have appeared in American TV Shows for the last nine years, and they even have clothing, books, Game Boy Color and PlayStation games based on themselves!

Double Vision
Watch Out, Mickey: Olsen Twins Gain Fast In Kids' Entertainment

HOLLYWOOD - Quick: After Disney, what is the most popular name in kids' home entertainment these days? Sesame Street? Barney? Try Olsen. With a series of low-budget videocassettes that have raked in $77 milliony in sales, 10-year-old twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have taken the No 1. spot in the nonanimated children's video market. In the process, the sisters, who cut their teeth on the hit ABC television sitcom "Full House," have become heroes to the under-12 set and millionaires to boot. Thanks to skillfull maneuvering by their parents, a careful master plan by an ambitious lawyer-manager, and a dearth of movies and videos for young girls, the sisters now sit atop an entertainment empire. Their credits include an eigth-season run on network TV, three made-for-TV movies, 14 shows made especially for home video, and a feature film. "When the girls left the TV show, everybody said their careers were over," says Robert Thorne, 42, the Hollywood lawyer who has carefully orchestrated Mary-Kate and Ashley's acting careers and...

Olsen cuties hit big-time beauty salon for that adorable look

America's favorite twins, Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, recently spent some of their $10 million (each) fortune getting their hair cut and colored at Manhattan's tony John Barrett Salon. He's the stylist-to-the-stars who cuts and fluffs the Friends gang every few weeks. The tiny tycoons decided that if Barrett was good enough to make "The Rachel" the most popular style in town, he was good enough for them. Both got a modified "Rachel" - shorter in front beginning at chin level - and both opted to stick with their bangs, though Mary-Kate let Barrett cut hers a bit shorter than Ashley's. Since their sitcom Full House went off the air two years ago, the twins, who turn 11 in June, have been busier than ever. They've made a fortune with TV movies, feature films and their own kids' video series which sell more than any others except Disney. The twins, who live in southern California with their mom, were in the Big Apple to attend a Hollywood for Children benefit.

OLSEN TWINS IN BITTER TUG OF LOVE

Heartbroken Full House twins Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen face the nightmare of being split up by a custody battle following their father's remarriage. "If they are separated it could leave emotional scars that would last a lifetime," a family friend told STAR. "But the judge may have to be Solomon." Insiders say the 9-year-olds, who jointly played Michelle Tanner on the hit sitcom, are devastated since dad David Olsen married his former secretary Mckenzie Taylor, 36 -and have taken opposite sides in the latest battle between their mother and father. They've even moved into separate bedrooms for the first time in their lives. A custody war could separate them permanently - With Mary Kate going to her dad and ashley staying with mom Jarnie. "Their father and mother are talking about sharing them - one to dad, one to mom," says the friend. "That's horrible for the children. Mary Kate was always a daddy's girl and ashley, the shyer one, was a mama's girl. But the kids are a mess now. The bond between them that was so strong is being threatened." The Split between the previously inseparable twins came to head when their father...

TWIN PEAKS

"Not to brag or anything," says 9-year-old Mary Kate Olsen, part-time fourth grader and full-time multimillionaire, "but I'm pretty tough.' Her twin sister, Ashley, would have to agree. "You don't want to get on her nerves," she says. "Sometimes she gets mad, and it's not a pretty sight." Fresh from a business meeting with their high-powered entertainment lawyer at his plush Century City, Calif., office, the two are lunching with him and a business associate at the L.A. theme restaurant Dive! And Mary Kate, unfazed by her sister's unflatterin discription, is digging into an enormous basket of fries. That she is the bossier twin is acceptable to both. "She's good for me," says Ashley, sucking down a mega-fruit shake. "No one tries anything around her." Forget Full House, the high-rated ABC series that first showcased the oddly appealing girls. Since its cancellation last year, the twins, who shared the role of Michelle Tanner, have become one of Hollywood's booming entertainment empires, worth upwards of $10 million. In addition to a list of credits rivaling those of stars twice their combined ages (two top-selling children's albums, three TV...

SISTER'S

Ashley & Mary- Kate Olsen, Sister's

Much as they loved their eight years playing Michelle Tanner on the recently canceled Full House, the Olsen twins, now 9, weren't wil about her wardrobe. "Ugly," says Ashley-a critique echoed by Mary Kate. "I hated some of the clothes," she confesses. "They were not my style. "Which like her sister's, is more casual than Michelle's: lots of T-shirts, shorts, overalls and jeans. "I never wear dresses," explains Mary Kate. "They're not comfortable." The picky pixie does like trendy duds that match, while her older (by three minutes) sisters opts for anything soft and fuzzy. "We don't borrow each other's clothes," says Ashley. Indeed, the San Fernando Valley fourth graders have dressed differently "since they could talk," says their father, Dave. One thing they would both like to do is get their ears pierced, though their folks have put that idea on hold. They'd also like to cut their hair, which now hangs past their shoulders. Says Ashley, sensibly: "Too many knots."

FULL TILT TO THE TOP!

They're only seven, but for the twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen it's Full Tilt to the top!

Now approaching the ripe old age of eight, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, twin stars of the immensely popular and long-running television series Full House, were just nine months old when they first shared the role of Michelle in 1987. While auditions usually terrify actors trying out for roles, Mary-Kate and Ashley slept through much of theirs! Their parents had sent some family snapshots to a talent agency, encouraged by a friend's agent who worked there. "We didn't think anything would come of it," says their father, mortage banker Dave Olsen. But the agency, liking what it saw, invited the twins to their first audition, for the pilot of Full House. Twins were necessary for the role of baby Michelle because child-labor laws in the U.S. strictly limit the time an infant can be on camera. "We saw seven sets of twins," recalls creator and executive producer Jeff Franklin, " but there was no contest. The other kids were crying. Ashley and Mary-Kate had a great time -happy kids, with those amazing blue eyes, who dropped off to sleep...

OLSENS TO THE RESCUE

The Full House Twins spin some Halloween movie magic - and keep their money-making machine churning

Ernest Hemingway once said that the real measure of a writer was an ability to write while in the throes of a hangover. I would like to append this for the '90s. The real measure of a writer is: to be able to fashion a story our of an interview with Full House's mighty munchkins, the Olsen twins. I've got history with the Olsens. Last year, when they were 6, I interviewed them while they were shooting their Christmas TV-movie, "To Grandmother's House We Go." It killed in the ratings. If you've read this far, you watched it. And probarbly their prime-time Mother's Day special, in which they courted and traded comedic riffs with a bevy of guests in the manner of tiny Bop Hopes. I had hoped the intervening year might have made them a bit more gregarious, because they were shooting around Vancouver in June for their Halloween special, "Double Double, Toil and Trouble" (ABC, Saturday), and I was to talk to them again. Ushered in to their presences, I find them in matching turquoise, pink and yellow chekered jumpers, with...
