"Cheer up!" twelve-year-old Mary-Kate Burke told her friend, Summer Sorenson, as she sat next to her on the bus. "Christmas break is only two weeks away!" "Easy for you to say," Summer replied glumly. "You didn't flunk Meany Meenan's test on Friday." "At least I hope I didn't," Mary-Kate said. "That test was tough." "I'll bet I totally flunked it," Rebecca Duncan chimed in. Can you believe he asked that question about the price of lard?"

"That was gross," Elise Van Hook called from the back of the bus. "There was way too much math on the test," Rebecca added. "I know," Summer said. "And the class is called How to Start Your Own Business. Who would have thought there'd be math with that?" Everyone laughed. Summer wasn't exactly the brainiest girl in their group.

"What?" Summer protested. "I thought this was going to be an easy class." I thought so, too, Mary-Kate silently agreed. She looked out the window and watched the snowy scenery pass by. She and her friends were riding the shuttle bus. It took them from the campus of White Oak Academy--their New Hampshire boarding school for girls--to the Harrington School for Boys next door. Each year both schools offered three-week classes right before winter break. Most of them were taught at Harrington.

"Who cares that the founder of Harrington liked fresh eggs so much that he had his own henhouse?" Ashley moaned. "That is so totally boring!" It was Monday afternoon. Ashley and Phoebe were in the school library, flipping through encyclopedias and looking up information for their newspaper article on Phineas T. Harrington III. "The dresses they wore back then weren't boring," Phoebe said. She pointed to a picture of two women wearing floor-length dresses that flared out in a large hoop shape at the bottom. "There were extreme!" Ashley wasn't surprised that Phoebe liked the dresses. Her roommate...

Ashley is so jealous.
Mary-Kate has a new math tutor-and he's totally cute! The problem is, Mary-Kate couldn't care less about cute.
Her math lessons are making her miss basketball practice-and that means she won't be able to play in the big game!

So the twins decide to switch places.
Now Ashley is working on fractions with the tutor, while Mary-Kate is working on her jump shot.

But can they fool everyone long enough to get what they want?

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen have been huge international stars since the age of 9 months, when they shared the role of Michelle in the sit com FULL HOUSE. With videos, video games, CDs, dolls, books, a fashion line and a magazine already under their belts in the US, they are poised to take over the UK market in 2002.
Ashley, you're dancing in the Nutcracker ballet tomorrow!" I said to my twin sister. "You're practically famous!"
I was sitting with Ashley and our friend Sarah in a corner of Madame Pavlova's dance studio. Ashley's ballet class practiced there every week. Tomorrow they would perform in the Pavlova Theater right next door!
"Come on, Mary-Kate." Ashley blushed. "I have a small part in the ballet. But I love being in the show."
"I wish I could be in the show too," Sarah said. She twirled a lock of her brown hair around her finger. "But I can't-all because of my dopey brother, Noah!"
Sarah is nine,...

Wow, Alex thought as she gazed up at the huge, elegant ship docked in the harbor.
A rock band played while kids danced on deck. Waiters roamed the crowd, carrying trays of food. Alex, Madison, and Griffen boarded the yacht and stepped onto the main deck.
"I'll get the drinks," Griffen offered.
"Pineapple smoothies for us will be just fine," Madison said, her eyes darting around the deck.
"Thanks a lot."
The band started playing a slow song. Alex looked to the stage. The lead singer strummed his guitar and sang.
He had brown hair that covered one of his big, dreamy brown eyes. He looked a little younger...

"Hurry up, Riley!" fourteen-year-old Chloe Carlson called to her sister. "I need to do my hair." "I'll be out in a second!" Riley called back from the bathroom. Chloe kept staring intently out the window of the bedroom she shared with Riley. Left was the street. Right was the beach. She gave each view a three-second scan. Pavement on the left. Sand on the right. Nobody in sight.

The bathroom door opened, and Chloe's twin sister came into the bedroom. Riley's shoulder-length blond hair was wet at the moment. Chloe's longer blond hair was covered with soft curlers. "Here I am," Riley announced,...

Riley made a quick phone call to her friend Sierra Pomeroy and arranged to meet her at the Newsstand.
Twenty minutes later she and Chloe pushed open the glass doors to the coffee house. A bunch of little tables and chairs filled the center of the room. Along one wall was a rack of international newspapers. Another wall was lined with computers. And at the back was a small stage for performers.
"Sierra!" Riley called, seeing her friend head into the rest room. Riley hurried to catch up with her. "Wow," she said, checking out the plaid skirt and boring white blouse Sierra was wearing. "Your mom...

OLSENS TO THE RESCUE

The Full House Twins spin some Halloween movie magic - and keep their money-making machine churning

Ernest Hemingway once said that the real measure of a writer was an ability to write while in the throes of a hangover. I would like to append this for the '90s. The real measure of a writer is: to be able to fashion a story our of an interview with Full House's mighty munchkins, the Olsen twins. I've got history with the Olsens. Last year, when they were 6, I interviewed them while they were shooting their Christmas TV-movie, "To Grandmother's House We Go." It killed in the...
