Rule #1: Never Pair a Red Lip with a Blue Shadow
With the array of blue hues and the myriad of red pigments available, this idea can absolutely be squashed. For instance, a gloss with bright, sheer color won’t overpower a deep navy blue eye, making the two complementary, not conflicting. Don’t be overwhelmed! In fact, this outdated rule shouldn’t apply to any bold color combos.

Rule #2: No Shimmer Shadows after 30
Wait. What? So long are the days when shimmer shades accentuated every – ahem – wrinkle. With new pigments and formulas, eyeshadows have a velvety texture for smooth distribution and crease-free wear. Plus, you can find a few duotones that will reflect different hues and, in turn, deflect attention away from any less desirable areas. Only true, intense, prismatic color will be revealed. So skip the Botox and rock the shimmer!

Rule #3: Pluck Your Brow to a Perfect Arch
Since my left brow has no arch and its tiny hairs grow haphazardly in all directions, I have a bias view of this rule. So if you can relate, drop the pencil and quick agonizing over symmetry. Instead of plucking until there’s nothing left, lightly comb the hairs up, remove a few unruly strands and set the rest with brow gel.

Rule #4: Your Nail Polish and Lipstick Should Be an Exact Match
Yeah right! Today, we ladies have nothing but choices when it comes to brilliantly bold nail polish colors: purples, greens, blues, oranges, yellows, pinks and more. Oh, my! (I swear the top drawer of my vanity looks like Skittles separated by color and melted into tiny bottles.) So whether you prefer a nude gloss, like me, or a classic red lipstick, confidently paint those phalanges any color of the rainbow you choose. After all, you can change your lip hue with a few swipes. But how often do you actually treat yourself to that mani/pedi? Hmmm…

Rule #5: Your Look Should Vary from Day to Night
Ummm… sometimes. Though it’s nice to have a few quick tricks up your sleeve, it’s not always necessary to alter your look throughout the day. With today’s casual corporate environments, we working-class women have more leeway when it comes to daytime cosmetic application. So instead of succumbing to pre-selected, eye color-enhancing quads, choose a variety of shades that highlight the real you and build your own palette. Only you know where to draw the line, defining what’s appropriate and what’s not. Hint: Reserve the Jerseylicious-inspired getup for your nighttime outings.

We’ve all been there… while rushing to get your mascara on, more of it ends up on your lid than on your lashes. Or you press a little too hard with your liquid liner and it looks like you’ve been taking crazy pills. My favorite of all offenders: you’ve created a masterpiece then with a heavy hand you try a new powder and now look like your grandmother’s friend whose make-up is so thick you could scratch your name across her cheek. But fear not ladies; make-up is temporary! No need to start over from scratch. Here are my favorite tips that have rescued me throughout the years.
