Lucy Hale Answers Every Beauty Question You’ve Ever Wanted to Ask Her
From acne struggles to over-plucked brow problems.
We’ve been watching Aria, er, Lucy Hale, since 2010 and, like her character on
, she’s grown up. A lot. The extremely talented actress and singer has come into her own on and off screen. And, as if we couldn’t love her more, during her downtime she casually belts out “Let It Go” (and nails it) with Rascal Flatts, and is not only a brand ambassador but a total role model for the makeup brand, Mark. Her duties as spokesperson involve spreading awareness about dating abuse and being extremely down to earth and amazing in general. We caught up with our favorite Rosewood resident this a.m. to discuss all things beauty: from the hair color she wishes she could try, to her struggles with acne. Get to know Lucy like you’ve never known her before.
is changing: I started on the show when I was 20, and I’m 26 now. We were always wondering when we were going to start playing more of our age so, for the remainder of the show, we’ve done a five-year time jump. That will be the sixth season, and then we have the seventh season which we start next year. You get to figure out where the girls go to college, their new careers, their new relationships, new wardrobe, new hair. And you get to figure out what happened during those five years. There are so many episodes of our show. We’ve shot around 150. For people who don’t want to start from the beginning — although I’d encourage that — you can start from the time jump and not feel completely lost.
beauty look has changed after the five-year jump: My makeup is a lot more toned down. Aria was always very glamorous. I’d be like, you’re going through turmoil, and you’ve got lashes on? What are you doing? But it’s a lot more natural now, which I like. We still have fun with makeup. After all, it is called
. It’s a beauty show. Cindy Miguens is our makeup artist on the show, and she’s been with us since the beginning. She’s amazing.
On whether she prefers short or long hair: I can’t remember having long hair. I miss having it to braid, and I can barely fit it into a ponytail now. I’m growing it out a little bit. There’s a few stragglers that I can’t quite get up. Short hair suits me a lot more, and I just went darker. I got pretty blonde there for a minute.
On her bold brows: Cara has great brows. You know who also has great brows? Lily Collins. I was always a little girl with a unibrow, and you go through a brow evolution. Now, I don’t even do anything to them. Your body remembers what you want. I finally found the shape that works for me. All [my makeup artist] Kelsey [Deenihan] does is fill them in a little bit. I’ve had horror stories where I’ve over-plucked them, and then finally they grow back out, and then I let someone else touch them and it is a disaster. I vowed to never let anyone touch them again. Long live the big brow!
On the look she likes to play up most: I used to be purely into eyes. I wanted a heavy smoky eye and lashes, lashes, lashes. I always thought that I didn’t look like myself without top liner. Kelsey has helped me get into bold lips.
On the beauty look she didn’t think she’d like, but did: I never thought I’d do blue like I did at the TCA. That was my one rule: Don’t put blue on me. But Kelsey did it. I was tired or in a bad mood, and I said, do whatever you want.
On her everyday beauty routine: My beauty routine when I don’t have to do anything is concealer where I need it, mascara, and lip balm. I love Lucas Paw Paw balm from Australia. I special order it. I’m very low maintenance because I’m always getting made up. I love getting pampered and I love it when Kelsey does my makeup, but I’m not a fan of spending hours getting ready in the morning. I used to, when I went to school and when I was younger. I’d wake up an hour and a half before to do my makeup. I never believed people when they said less is more, but it really is true! I am at that point. You’re right. Less
On her favorite bronzer: I love the Touch and Glow from Mark. There are three, but the coral is my favorite. I think coral looks good on everyone.
On the one beauty product she can’t live without: Lucas Paw Paw Ointment.
On the makeup move she’s totally nailed: I can cover a zit like no one’s business. I use a pointed liquid eyeliner brush and dip it in the concealer. I am OCD. I want no spots. And I dip it in powder after to set it.
On her go-to concealer: I like Clé de Peau. They have my exact skin tone shade.
On the lipstick that makes her feel the most confident: Mark Lipclick Matte Full Color Lipstick in Vixen. It’s different than your standard red lip. Not many people wear it and, as I get older, I like to do things that people don’t do a lot.
On her beauty indulgence: I am pretty loyal to my facialist. I’ve tried all different kinds of facial products. I’m acne prone, so I have to keep it pretty basic. I keep it consistent with a facial every two weeks.
On her beauty advice: I don’t think young girls are told enough that what makes you different, makes you cool. I didn’t feel like that when I was younger. I had big eyebrows and braces. That is unconventionally beautiful. I wish girls could embrace their quirks more. I’ve always thought that the stranger looking people are the most beautiful. And, obviously, the most confident, as well. I think it’d be boring if we all looked the same.
On how she’s treated her acne: What have I not done? I have facials often. I’m also a big fan of Dr. Lancer products. I use toner, face wash, and lotion from his acne line.
On the beauty look she wishes she could try if she wasn’t filming: I want to dye my hair a crazy color. I wanted to do jean-colored blue. But Rihanna just did it, and I saw it, and I was like…now I can’t do that! I’ve always wanted to do that, but I’m about to start working.
On how her beauty vibe changes from L.A. to NYC: I feel so much cooler in NY! I feel way edgier. You get to wear cooler clothes. I was so excited to bust out my coats. It is still 90 degrees in LA. I’m ignoring the weather and wearing my sweaters anyway. You just feel so much more chic in NYC. Everyone is so stylish. I love people watching here.
On her beauty icons: I love old school Elizabeth Taylor right now. She’s so gorgeous. I love the classics: Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn.
On the current state of country music: Country music is in such a cool spot right now. For people who have said it’s gone a little too mainstream, I love that kind of music, so I’m a little biased. There are a lot of artists out there like Ashley Monroe and Kasey Musgraves who are keeping the classics in country still alive. I’m so excited about how women in country music are revving back up and making a comeback. It wasn’t like that a couple of years ago. Like Kelsea Ballerini, Maddie & Tae, and RaeLynn. There’s a group of country voices who are really making a name for themselves.
On her future singing plans: I’m focusing on film right now; I’m doing some movie stuff and the show. I’m definitely going to make another album. It might be a bit of a wait, but i’m still figuring out what I am going to say, and I want it to be very different from my last album. Music will always be a big part of me.
beauty girl IRL: Shay [Mitchell] by far. Shay is so glamorous. You wouldn’t expect that from her character, but she always looks amazing. She’s always in heels and has her hair impeccably done.
On her advice to her 15-year-old self: Don’t sweat the small stuff. What you think is a problem now, I promise, will not even be a blip on the radar when you're older. It’s hard not to worry about everything when you’re that age…but try to live in the moment and soak it all in.
