I thought about this, too and it seems to make sense.
Both pairs seem to be bound by a set of rules that says that neither of them can kill the other. However, they can get other people to kill them, or kill people close to them.

Why? I have no idea. But I feel like Jacob and his rival are Ben and Widmore on a much bigger scale.
