Lord of the Rings Question

Could Sauron ever redeem himself and be good again, if he were given the choice? (I want your opinion, not Tolkien's writing)

No, he could not. He was fully evil, and there was no turning back for him.

No, Sauron had gone far beyond recall of good will when he first made the One Ring. He could not redeem himself now, after all this time.

I find the idea ridiculous.

Sauron was the mightiest of the Maia. He knew Good and Evil, and he chose Evil. He had literally thousands of years to repent and redeem himself if he'd wanted to.

Clearly, he didn't want to. But your question was could he, and I will say no, absolutely not. The blood of millions was on his hands, millions he willfully slaughtered, either by order or by his own hand, and you can not be redeemed after that stain.

I don't think so. Someone who had committed that fully to darkness could not just turn good again. He made a choice a long time ago, a choice that would stand for all eternity. He was still made by Iluvatar, and hence is good in the sense that he had a purpose, but he placed himself on the side of evil through his own grievous fault, and there is nothing in him now that would ever even compel him to think of fighting for good.

Yes, I think he could. I think if he were given the chance he could turn good, I don't really think hes evil you know he could be as good as Gandalf if he was given the chance! He could get over the evil, power wanting and all that stuff and be good, you'd never even know he was evil. I think still hes not all bad, he just wants people to think that so hes "Powerful" You know, and, I bet hes good underneath it all. :)

Judging by my name, I'd have to agree with you. Now I'll give you what I found. Sauron was corrupted and totally screwed over (in all senses of the word) by Morgoth. Now, THIS GUY is purely evil. But if you ask me, he sucks donkey butt. Love you, Sauron!!

I don't think so. The ring is pure evil and corrupts the beholder. And since Sauron's life is connected to the ring techniqually a part of him will always be evil whether he chose to be good or not. So he will always be corrupt.

No, I'm asking about Sauron. The dude who made the One Ring. My icon is a picture of him. No, Saruman the White is just a creeper.

Personally, I believe that if Sauron was given the choice to redeem himself, he would kill whoever gave him that choice, probably bringing on another war. Sauron's mind was penetrated and manipulated so much by the original dark lord, morgoth, that he would and will never be able to even think a kind thought, it's not possible for him.

Maybe. But it's still funny to picture the two of them in the Void and Sauron going ballistic raging at Morgoth for making him evil and screwing up his life.

Alchir said:
Well there was the instance in the silmarilion when he said he had repented but when told to go back to valinor and await manwes trial he fled, but sauron in the third age could not redeem himself no matter what he was to steeped in evil and even lost some powers to this. Just remembered that after the ring was destroyed he became a powerless spirit so hes got a lot of time thinking about what he had done

True, although knowing Sauron, he's more likely to spend that time raging at Morgoth for making him evil.
