It was late afternoon; House was waiting anxiously like every other graduate outside the new high-tech teaching hospital in Michigan. He was going to find out whether or not the second time was a charm, and he’d get one of the three lucrative spots to be one of Dr. Matthews’ residents; he was the most known doctor in the United States, for his uncouth methods when treating patients.

House had been told a lot by his professors, that his own attitude and perspective of medicine was similar to Matthews’, something that House used to build up on his once squashed confidence and self-esteem, from all the times his father told him he was never good enough.

“Do you think you’ll get it?” A short, less statuesque man said to House, his fingers twitching and the beads of sweat rolling down his acne scarred face. House just looked down at him, bemused as to why he was speaking to him, “Of course. I’m a shoe in, compared to you.” House smirked, as he glared down at the young man, whose smile turned to a grim look.

There was now an ever grown crowd lurking beside, and behind, House. Mostly made up of scraggly, tall and short men. Graduates never really cared about appearance, even if they were prospective doctors. The only person that stood out, was a youthful looking woman, she caught House’s eye because she was the only woman waiting eagerly with the herd. House enjoyed her painstaking attempts to peer over the hunched shoulders of the other graduates, her height being her only deficit in House’s eyes.

When he heard some movement within the Dean Of Medicines office, he focused his attention to the double doors in front of him, as this tall and large grey haired man came out, holding a single piece of paper. He stuck it to the side of his large burgundy double doors, before moving slowly towards the doors that were the entrance to the secretary’s adjacent office, which doubled up as a waiting room for beneficiaries and doctors alike.

As soon as he found his keys, fumbling through his waistcoat, the Dean opened up the doors, before being knocked back by the strong and musky smelling men who clambered towards the sheet of paper, trying not to rip it.

House recognised his name, first on the list. He smiled, and punched the air, nearly knocking out the small doctor to the side of him. When he turned around, he noticed everyone else’s faces were facing the ground, finding out they never got a spot, most of them either ran out cursing, or others sunk to the floor to the side of room, to be consolidated by the middle-aged secretary, who tried desperately to stop them from messing up her piles of paper on her desk.

House waited, curious as to who the other two doctors were, since he’d be spending 80 hours a week with them, he didn’t want to be with boring trust-fund idiots.

A grimace appeared on his face, as a dashing young looking doctor, slightly shorter than House, smiled as he saw his name on the sheet. His pristine and pretentious outfit annoyed House, since he knew he neither had the balls, or the brain to win a spot, and that either his mother gave the dean a private party, or his father flashed the cash.

Whilst so many insults ran around his head, he turned his head, as the young woman walked cautiously towards the sheet of paper. Her brown curly hair pulled back into a ponytail as she looked up, and smiled as she read her name.

Spinning around, she couldn’t help but smile out into the now empty room, as she became the first female doctor Matthews’ had ever took under his wing in the thirty years he had been a doctor.

“Congratulations.” House said in a deep, wry voice. “Thank you.” Her voice was sultry, it took House off guard, since he didn’t think a woman dressed in acid wash blue jeans, and a pink cropped sweatshirt, would have a voice like that.

“It wasn’t really a compliment, more a warning.” House stood up from his casual leaning position on the wall, and walked towards her, “I heard that he could no longer see patients, after being sanctioned so many times for his brutal way of treating them. He makes his residents do the most un-ethical things that only one makes it through the three years.”

He glared down at her, looking to see a twitch of the lips, a slight wince or even a dilated pupil. However, all he noticed was her Cupid’s bow nude lips, a perfectly still stance and beautiful green eyes.

“You think you’re scaring me?” Placing her hand on her hip, she smiled up at him, “You must be Gregory House.” House looked puzzlingly at her, “How do you know me?” She laughed, “Everybody knows you, I’ve heard every professor I’ve ever had compare me to you. How you’re so intelligent, you push boundaries, there’s never a dull moment. I’m surprised it hasn’t gotten back to you, it’s not like your ego needs anymore added to it.”

As she turned to walk away, House grabbed her arm, “Who the hell are you then? You’re reputation doesn’t exactly proceed you.” She pulled her arm away, before walking up to him, unafraid, “My name’s Lisa Cuddy. And just because my reproductive organs are on the inside instead of the outside, doesn’t mean I am anything less than a fellow doctor. I’m here to learn, and to work hard, not to be yours or any other man’s eye candy. Understand?”

House stood their, trying to hide his amusement, “Okay.” Cuddy turned around, and left him, as he smiled whilst watching her walk away into the hustle and bustle of the busy coridoor.
