He probably just kept him alive because he was confused about why his son had kept him alive and why Toothless didn't kill him while he was pinned down and so ordered him not to be killed as a precaution. But after he would talk to Hiccup and realize that his son is on the side of the dragons he'd have Toothless killed publically so that Hiccup would "come to his senses" which would only make Hiccup go into a deep depression and run away to live with dragons.

hiccup would have done anything to save toothless (he tryed to run away befor maybe he would have tryed to again with toothless)so some how he would have saved him,for hiccup his dad loves him so he wont kill hiccup you can tell i dont think he would have killed him maybe exiled him or dissowned him (disowned is it the right word to use?) or some thing

I'm not entirely sure. It's either he would've killed him out of rage considering that Hiccup chose to side with him instead of 'being a Viking' or he'd keep him alive so that they can study him seeing as they don't have any recordings of a Night Fury.
