Sorry about the wait. Christmas and all...
Chapter 18
House was understandably surprised, but that was the least of Thirteen’s worries. Bo was smart. She would catch on. Maybe she already had. She had told House enough that he knew what was going on. She was brilliant, but he wasn’t psychic. Obviously shed told him quite a bit. She may have even had part of it figured out when she talked to him. This wasn’t how or when Thirteen would have chosen for Bo to find out, but it seemed she didn’t have much of a choice.
“Excuse me,” she said, getting up. At that particular moment it didn’t matter that House, Taub, and the patient, who had crawled out of the MRI machine, were all staring at her. Her daughter was standing right outside the door.
“Bo,” she said, slightly surprised, though she shouldn’t have been because it was just like her daughter to follow House down here.
“What do we have?” Bo asked.
“Follow me,” Thirteen said. She didn’t want to have half the team eavesdropping on this conversation.
“Where are we going?” Bo asked.
“Out,” Thirteen answered simply.
“Out where?” Bo asked.
“Somewhere not in the hospital,” Thirteen answered.
“You have no idea where we’re going,” Bo deduced, following none the less.
“I don’t want to explain this here,” Thirteen answered.
“But you are going to explain this,” Bo said.
“Yes,” Thirteen answered. “I am going to explain this.”
“Why aren’t you telling me here?” Bo asked.
“More likely than not, by time you graduate high school you’ll have had enough of hospitals. I know I have and I haven’t even started down that road,” Thirteen explained. “I just thought it would be nice to go somewhere else.”
“Mom, where’s your favorite place in the world?” Bo asked. Thirteen thought for a moment. She didn’t really know. She hadn’t really fit in anywhere for a long time.
“There was this park when I was really little,” she finally decided. “I used to go there every afternoon before my life started falling apart.”
“Do you want to go there?” Bo asked.
“Bo, that’s like, an hour away,” Thirteen replied.
“Let’s go,” Bo said, and that was all the persuasion Thirteen needed.
