Prologue
"Mark, you've got your whole life ahead of you..." The words echoed in my mind. They were the last honest words I had heard from my brother, all before he was taken by the very darkness that now calls my name. There was a time when I knew him, loved him even. My big ol' Brother, who always fought my fights and took the blame for every wrong I ever did... The real Hero of this gods forsaken time. Jordan Ivory was his name,
The year was 2031, and everyone around knew something big was about to happen. People wouldn't talk about it, but every time we'd watch television, someone or something would show us how messed up this nation was. We were all scared, even Jordan. Of course, he'd tell me not to worry, that everything would blow on over, and it would be fine... But I knew better, the look in his eyes when he listened to the radio broadcasts, they showed me enough to know the truth... We were about to face something new. Something that would change everything. With the rumors of monsters popping up around the world, and talk of children of gods... Well, it all sounded like something out of a movie. Needless to say, I hoped things would change, cause we sure needed it.
Chapter 1. Love Hurts
"Tell him you didn't mean it!" Jordan insisted, standing between me and my enraged father.
"Hell, I did mean it, you're a fucking monster!" I had cried, pointing at him, as if to condemn the man. "I know it, mom knows it, even you know it!"
"Jordan..." My father growled, with such a glare, it was as if he was fixed for a kill. "Move."
"No Father... I will not." Jordan told him in open defiance, pressing his hand firmly against the man's chest. "Mark, I need you to go upstairs..." He let out a sigh, motioning towards the upstairs. Scoffing, I had struck one final glare in my father's direction, before retreating into the attic.
"God-dammit Jordan!" I heard just before the sound of a loud thud erupted from downstairs. "Never do that again..." The same voice called out in anger towards my brother, then everything fell silent.
Moments later my brother made his way into the attic room, where I slept. He sat beside me and groaned a little, touching his side lightly.
"Alright, lemme have a look at ya." He quietly said, inspecting the bruise on my cheek.
"I'm gonna kill em..." I had growled, holding my eyes tightly shut in fear of breaking into tears.
"No... Your not." Jordan told me, glaring at me for just a moment, before roughing up my hair. "Besides, someone needs to keep my idiot brother from going sane." He chuckled as I curse in protest.
"I hate it when you do that..."
His hand reached into his pocket, taking out a small pack of cigarettes, before lighting one and handing it to me. "Here, got these from Gwen." I grinned, feeling my tense body begin to ease as the smoke fills my lungs.
"Two greatest things about America, drinking and getting laid." He laughed with a wink, before taking a swig from his beer bottle.
"And what is that supposed to mean...?" I asked out of curiosity. Strange, it had been the first drink he'd had in several weeks.
"... Huh, guess this is one of those; I'll tell ya when your older moments." He chuckled, leaning back against the bed.
"Aw come on!" I plead, punching his shoulder playfully.
"Love is a powerful thing, Mark." Jordan sighed after a long pause. "... Love's what keep's ya going, through the good and the bad... It's that little bit of heaven, in a vast hell..."
"I just don't know why mom puts up with him... I mean, Dad's fucking insane." I muttered the last bit, taking a puff from the smoke. It was just the two of us in the attic, and just the way I liked it. Jordan had this way of calming me when our father fought.
"She's still in love with the man he was, back before he joined the Army." He told me, shaking his head slowly.
"Marky, do me a favor, never join the Army... It's full of freaks."
Mom would talk about the times they had before Dad graduated from the UNE's Officer Academy. Back when he wasn't so messed up... She would tell us how Dad would take her on a date every Friday night, and how he would never miss a call when he was in college. Mom had a lot of love to give him, and he gave it back, but that was a time I never had a chance to see.
"So Gwen's gonna be picking me up in a half an hour, wanna tag along?" Jordan asked, finishing his drink.
"Where we going?" I looked up at him, taking the smoke from my mouth.
"Out'a this hell hole, that's a given. She said I could bunk at her place tonight, so naturally I said; I ain't coming without my Idiot"" He teased with a laugh.
"Sure ya did..."
"Oh, I swear, it's the truth!" Jordan performed the catholic cross as he chuckled.
"Alright, I'll come, as long as I get to play on her brother's Desktop." I said quietly, following my Brother out the window, as we had done so many times before.
"I'm sure she'll let ya, cause her families out tonight..." He grinned slightly to himself, all while helping me down to ground level. "It'll be just us three..."
After a few minutes of walking down the streets, Gwen's car pulled over beside us. "I call shotgun!" I had instantly shouted, causing my Brother to give me another death glare.
"...Whatever." Jordan grumbled as he stepped inside the small hatchback.
I had slid in the passenger seat and glace at Gwen, who was wearing her great-grandpap's bomber jacket from Vietnam.
"Evening." I noded with a grin, glancing back towards Jordan. "Right back at you, kiddo." She chuckled quietly, roughing up my hair just as Jordan had done.
"Oh, not you too!" I groaned, leaning away as Jordan laughs in the back seat. "Yeah-yeah laugh it up..." I mutter as we drive towards Gwen's house.
"So Marky, how's school going?" Gwen asked me, trying to break the silence that had formed out of the blue.
"Oh, you know... It's school." I muttered the last bit, watching as she turns us into her Dad's driveway.
"Get in any more fights at school...?" Gwen turned, sending me a deep look of concern.
"... Nope." I smiled, lying through my teeth. Gwen was a nice enough girl, but I only saw her a couple times when we all met after school. half the time they were making out and smoking which didn't help me, since Jordan only allowed me to smoke at home, being my supplier and all... Wow... Sounds like something out of a cop show.
"Alright so Mark, we'll be in her room while you play, just knock if you need something." Jordan told me as he stepped outside, glancing slightly at Gwen as she exited the car.
"Got'cha..." I nodded in response, following the two inside. It would be the last decent sleep we'd get for quite some time...
