At my uni we've been studying the way gender and sexism shapes the education curriculum.

This was an article we were actually given to read and debate about in a seminar:

"Harry Potter's girl trouble
The world of everyone's favorite kid wizard is a place where boys come first.
By Christine Schoefer

Four factors made me go out and buy the Harry Potter books: Their impressive lead on the bestseller lists, parents' raves about Harry Potter's magical ability to turn kids into passionate readers, my daughters' clamoring and the mile-long waiting lists at the public library. Once I opened "The Sorcerer's...

1. I will not poke Hufflepuffs with spoons, nor will I insist that their House colors indicate that they are "covered in bees".

2. No matter how good a fake Australian accent I can do, I will not imitate Steve Irwin during Care of Magical Creatures class.

3. "I've heard every possible joke about Oliver Wood's name" is not a challenge.

4. Putting up Doug Henning posters in Filch's office is not appropriate.

5. I will not go to class skyclad.

6. The Giant Squid is not an appropriate date to the Yule Ball.

7. I will not use Umbridge's quill to write, "I told you I was hardcore".

*The Great Hall was built for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 2000 and was used as a key set for six more films. (The Great Hall does not appear in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1).

*The House Points Counter was rarely seen on screen, but it is rumoured that when it was first built it caused a national shortage of Indian glass beads.

*The spectacular Great Hall includes the costumes of students from each Hogwarts house plus two large tables which are set for dinner; at the top of the room is the teachers' table where the Hogwarts Professors sat. Iconic scenes such as the Yule Ball and the Battle of Hogwarts were filmed here.

The crest of Gryffindor.
This was on Harry Potter Wiki, please do not credit me for ANYTHING. The only difference was that on HPW, it was a table.
The Houses of Hogwarts

Gryffindor
Basic info: Gryffindor is well known for bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry. The house colors are deep red and gold, and the house is symbolized by a lion. The entrance to the common room is on the seventh floor hidden behind a portrait of the Fat Lady. In order to get into the common room, Gryffindor students must say the correct password.

House ghost: Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as Nearly Headless Nick.

Dear Friend,

Firstly, let me say that although this is a form response, there is a very good chance I read your letter; I always look through the mail, but I receive so much these days that unfournately it is not possible to answer everything individually. Nevertheless, it means the world to me that Harry Potter fans take the time and trouble to write and share their thoughts, feelings and life experiences, their favourite characters and parts of the books, not to mention my involvement with the films, Harry has been, and continues to be, one of the most important things in my life.

If you have...

Favorite Quotes by Hermione Granger

"Oh Harry, don't you see? If she could have done one thing to make absolutely sure that every single person in this school will read your interview, it was banning it!"

--------------------------------------------------

Hermione drew herself to her full height; her eyes were narrowed and her hair seemed to crackle with electricity.
"No," she said, her voice quivering with anger, "but I will write to your mother."

--------------------------------------------------

They were so busy that Hermione had stopped knitting elf hats and was fretting that she was down...

Here's some fan fiction i just thought of this morning. Thought I'd share it with you guys. Please tell me if you like or dislike it! Thanks!

It was cold and dark. I couldn't see a thing. I looked around me trying to make out anything I could in the meek moonlight. Anything at all. No. Nothing. An abyss of darkness. Suddenly, I heard a shriek. I glanced around trying to figure out which way it was coming from. I took out my wand (I couldn't believe I hadn't thought of this before) and whispered "Lumos." Nothing happened. Then, I heard the shriek again. I started running forward. The shriek....

I've been thinking about this for a while. You see the first time I read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban I was confused.Peter Pettigrew was sorted in Gryffindor - the house of bravery and loyalty.Peter was ready to forget about his friendship so easily. But now I feel that he was a real Gryffindor. He was loyal to He-who-must-not-be-named , he was brave enough to cut his own hand , lived as a rat so many years...
I'm not mad at him.He was just a boy and he was afraid.

It annoys a bit when people say he didn't diserve to be a Gryffindor.

Dudley: They stuff people's heads down the toilet the first day at Stonewall. Want to come upstairs and practice?
Harry: No, thanks. The poor toilet's never had anything as horrible as your head down it -- it might be sick.

1st Weasley Twin: Oh, are you a prefect, Percy? You should have said something, we had no idea.

Chapter 6

Later in the day, Harry, Ron and Hermione came back to Professor Snape’s grave. They remained silent for a moment. Then Harry took a book out from under his robes. “I found it back in the Room of Requirement.” He showed the ‘Advanced Potion Making’ textbook that had belonged to the Half-Blood Prince, and which had been a trusty companion during his sixth year. “Despite the Fyendfire Crabbe has cast in there, the book has been spared. I guess it was protected in that cabinet where I had put it,” he explained. “Poor Snape… He was not even the master of the Elder Wand....

Chapter 4

Okay, trudging up a big hill in the early hours of morning wearing a skirt wasn't the best of choices.

But it was Ginny's fault! She's the one who made me wear a mini- skirt, and she had no right to stomp n my foot when Harry choked on his cereal when he saw me. As far as I'm concerned, she can have him.

I'm not really the type to fall in love, or food poisoning, or whatever you call looking like your trying to suck eachother's faces off.

But there I was, looking at Cedric, wearing a black mini-skirt, black and white striped knee...

***SPOILER ALERT***

I rarely ship non-canon couples. But this is one non-canon couple that I absolutely adore. It's not a very popular one. In fact, it's quite unpopular amongst fans, partially because most people are fairly content with HarryxGinny. Some of the most common non-canon couples concerning these characters are HarryxHermione and NevillexLuna. I honestly cannot stand either coupling, but I'll get into that later. (Remember, this is just my opinion! I have nothing against others who think differently! I totally respect it! Just putting my point of view out there!) So I'm just going...

Well it's time to review and share thoughts on yet another great series. Perhaps not as good a series than made out to be but still a VERY good one.

Story:( don't read if you already know)

Well who couldn't know the story of harry potter and the wizardry world. Harry Potter an 11 year old boy who lives in Privet Drive with his Aunt and Uncle. His parents died when he was a baby apparently in a car crash. Little does he know that he's actually a wizard and soon he gets a letter from Hogwarts, school of witchcraft and wizardry. Many adventures await him and the books do wonderful jobs of giving...

As all the societies and countries do, the English magic community has it's own governmental center, the Ministry of Magic.

The Ministry of Magic is composed by many parts and sectors. Some of them are
•the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (Auror Office, the Improper Use of Magic Office, the Wizengamot a.o.),
•the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes (the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad, the Obliviator Headquarters and the Muggle-Worthy Excuse Committee),

It was a very nice day, and finally getting warmer. Since today was a beautiful day, Professor Isles took her students outside for today’s lesson. She had sent out notes to every student, telling them to meet her on the Training Grounds. Madam Hooch had told her they had a gnome infestation there, and since that was this lesson’s topic, she thought it was best to go to them.

All her students were outside on time, and Professor Isles smiled as she started. “Good morning, class,” she said. “As you can see, it’s a beautiful day today, so I wanted to take you outside to study gnomes....

Lily's POV

My heart is fluttering in my chest. Just relax, I think to myself. You can do this. But I can feel my brothers' eyes on me, and Rose's too. Even her friends are gawking. I wonder what my mother would make out of all of this: Am I doing the right thing? But somehow, I think she would agree with me. I'm trying to get Hugo to come back to us, so he can be a Weasley again. I need for this to work.

I get to the Slytherin table, and approach Hugo and his friends. It takes all of my effort to smile. ''Hi, Hugo..'' But my tone comes out wrong. I sound nervous. But he doesn't seem to pick...

i finished harry potter and the deathly hallows last night an the ending was truly amazing . it was much better than the movies ending, don't get me wrong i loved the movie but the way voldermort died was much different . he died out on the landing just near the entrance but in the book he died in the Great Hall. some things are the same but there was some things that were brillant and people will never know about it because people will never read the books. also the books explain things much better and it all fits together in the end. it was amazing!!!! i can't wait to start reading the whole series again!!!!
The pumpkin juice was spilled all over Severus Snape's face, and some managed to dribble into his jet black hair (which in Lilly's opionion, wasn't greasy but more silky). His clothes were too big, and hung over him, like drapery on a curtain rod. "Sev," Lilly Evans hissed across the table, "there's some juice in your hair." He flushed a shade of scarlet, embarassed at the thought of how rediculous he must look. He grabbed a cloth napkin off the table, and seemingly scrubbed his face, as if rubbing it harder would make James Potter's laughter stop. Lilly caught Severus's hand. "You shouldn't...
