Yes the island itself is indeed a real island located 50km of the goal coast of Queensland Australia. It's home to many types of animal life and sharks. However the island isn't called Mako, in real life. The only thing I'm unsure of is the name itself. To the north of the island there is a place called Tritons reef, a place where sharks go to breed.
