Breaking down the shots from the ‘Inside GoT’ video

I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Some Observations on our first Inside GoT
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Yesterday afternoon, after zero trailers and very little new footage of
Twitter account released the first Behind the Scenes short for the upcoming season. In terms of timing, it was right on cue: the first of these shorts usually comes out a couple of weeks after the big trailer drop. There are usually four or five such shorts, and they appear every couple of weeks between the trailer and the premiere. Of course the “big trailer drop” was more of a sad trombone for most: a Hall of Faces-themed teaser that didn’t feature any new footage.
video was interesting for a second reason: unlike in years past, there was no email to subscribers that a new video was uploaded to YouTube. Instead, like everything else this season, the video arrived via Twitter. If one goes to the
YouTube page, the video isn’t there, due to privacy settings. This narrow use of a single mode of social media to announce the release of all promotional material for the coming season is surprising, especially since, by many accounts, Twitter is on the decline. Using Twitter to release everything three seasons ago would have been cutting edge. Now it’s just preferable to those terrible Snapchat-style videos from last year.
Dan pulled some screenshots from the five-minute clip yesterday in his post, but I wanted to dive a little deeper into these images and pull a few more than he didn’t.
I want to start here with this picture. Note the men in the doorway. In the clip, they are clearly working through fight choreography But they are definitely not Sons of the Harpies: the clothes are too leather and brown. That’s because they’re on the same set we see in this image:
Look at the walls, and you’ll see they are a match. During filming, we gathered many spoilers, but we found very little about Daario and Jorah’s attempts to rescue Daenerys. It looks like that’s because at least some of their stuff was filmed on an indoor set.
This is a cute image of Huisman playing around, but it should be noted again that it’s from the same shoot. The question is whether these underground tunnels are located in the same place as this:
A look at the walls suggests that they are. This is important because, as we see in other shots, this is probably part of Vaes Dothrak.
This shot is from filming on site in Almeria, and the color appear to match those used in the previous shots. My bet is that this is from Dany’s arrival at Vaes Dothrak, and that the fight choreography we saw being done in the earlier shot is of Jorah and Daario taking down Dothraki, or taking down slaves who live there.
One more point: due to this next shot, we have a good idea when these scenes will fall in the season.
So from what we know, Dany’s adventure to Vaes Dothrak, and whatever happens that will free her from their captivity, will go down down in the first half of the season.
Another striking aspect: the Jorah/Daario plot is the only storyline from Season 6 that we didn’t have a clue about before this. If we look through the rest of the screen shots, though some of them are technically “unseen before now,” they are from scenes we had glimpses of in the promotional pictures.
These are a perfect example. Although these are our first images of Young Ned and Young Brandon from the Winterfell flashback, we’ve already seen another shot from this scene: in the promotional pictures the other week:
Dan thought this was from Season 5. Not so. I think it’s the scene that concludes with his arrival back in King’s Landing, as seen in the promotional pictures:
(And since we know from filming spoilers that this was done in Dubrovnik, we know this is from the very beginning of the season.)
Now let’s look at the shots from the House of Black and White, probably filmed in Belfast.
Jaqen H’ghar is treating a dead body. When the camera pulls in close, we see something that shouldn’t come as a surprise: his face has been cut out.
I mean, we all knew that’s what they did to the bodies. It’s not a spoiler.
The same goes for this shot of Ellie Kendrick (Meera) This shot doesn’t tell us much, other than “Meera is still around and it’s still snowy north of the Wall.”
Ditto the Sons of the Harpy fighting against a green screen, which we see from a couple of different angles. This is more of what we expected from these characters.
We all really want to know what she’s looking at.
We all really want to know what they are talking about. Especially since this shot looks to be filmed at the Castle Black set.
But what’s interesting to me is how they introduce this shot:
Note down by the feet to the right of the guards: the tops of the Flayed Man cross of House Bolton.
As we pan across this fog covered field, you can see more crosses. Now, those of us who have paid attention to spoilers know exactly what this field is: this is where the Battle of the Bastards happens. It’s the site of the big fight that will serve as the climax of the season in Episode 9. According to rumor, Ramsay will tie a couple of people to those crosses and burn them during the battle. But there’s no hint of what they might be for in this shot. It’s almost a mundane scenery shot.
The Battle of the Bastards took 13 weeks to film from start to finish. (The battle itself took nine.) The production couldn’t leave the images out—clearly, the show is very proud of the sequence. But the fact that what it shows is devoid of detail suggests that the producers know perfectly well they can’t let us know who was filming.
…Jeyne Westerling, lately bereaved widow to Robb Stark. Jeyne, as book-readers know, does...
Hear that faint ticking sound? It’s the clock slowly ticking away to the Game of Thrones...
Have you already read all the books and/or don\'t care about spoilers? You can reveal all the spoilers in the comments with the click of a link below.
Honestly, there is no spoilers this time around. Unlike last year, the featurette spoiled the fight between White Walker and man (Jon to be exact). GoT team obviously is much more careful this year.
Sorry but I think the two that are going to be flayed are going to be Ramsay and Roose…
I feel like Sansa is going to tell all to her Bro Jon, including the flaying of The old lady and her rape!
Sansa is going to get her revenge … Jon will help see it through and Ramsay and Roose are going to flayed together!
Flaying takes time … I would kill those monsters as fast as possible …
If Oberyn had kill The Mountain at the first chance … we wouldn’t have met the Sand Snakes …
Why why why why why do people still think she was raped when they should know better. First night. Ramsey and Sansa both knew that they’d have to “do the deed” to seal the marriage contract, so she knew going in to the bed chamber she’d have to have sex with him. It wasn’t rape.
Not sure of your beliefs in how to treat a woman or a wife. But let me clue you in from a gentlemen’s perspective, me being one.
Sansa in a sense was forced to marry Ramsay. She knows that. What’s her other alternative?
Here is where the rape comes in. When you make someone watch you sexually violate your ” wife” as you rip her clothes off as she’s crying and frightened especially knowing she’s never been that way with a man before, and draw attention to it by forcing another man to watch… ” watch her become a woman”
My friend that is a woman being sexually abused, raped whatever you want to call it. If you consider this not rape or sexual abuse… Please stay away from women.
For real. No ones trippin when Jaime raped cersi right next to their dead son/nephew or whatever.
Anyone think Ramsey is burning people that look like Sansa and other Stark family loyalists? Ramsey: I have your sister! Take one more step and I’m flaying her alive!
Sansa: I’m right behind you, Jon! Cut him in two, brother!
Theon (Reek) would be more than justified for the torture.
Sansa would be more than justified for the forced sex.
Theon kills Ramsey to gain power, or Ramsey kills Theon because he kills his newborn.
Arya because they prevented her last minute reunion with her mother. Plus it exercises her new skills.
It’s March 1 we want our trailer already, why must you tease us HBO? Lol
Since HBO pushes the season debut all the way back to April 24, you will not see the official trailer until mid March. Typically GoT trailer debuts about one month before the season premiere, never earlier.
I’m really puzzled about those burning crosses. Most people are predicting Roose and Walda, but why would that annoy the enemies of the Boltons? Unless Roose makes a peace treaty, and this is Ramsay’s way of destroying the pact. (But would the whole Bolton army go along with that? I doubt it). Other people are predicting Tormund, but again, why would that bother the Northern armies? Maybe it would depress the wildlings, but they’re a pretty small component of the army which the Boltons will be facing. Another prediction was Rickon, but someone ‘in the know’ said that’s definitely not happening. So it’s very puzzling – none of the main theories make a whole lot of sense to me. Any other ideas?
Stannis’ body will surely have putrified by then. And anyway, like with some of the others, that wouldn’t really dispirit the Northern armies (who don’t really care about Stannis). Plus, burning a dead body? Why would that terrify anyone? That’s just how they deal with dead bodies in the North.
It could be Tormund if he takes on a Mance Rayder role – does some recon or spying on Winterfell and gets caught :(
Never though of that. That makes sense.
0.45 besides the cross on fire… On the right, among the Bolton army, there are wildlings walking … because Ramsay doesn’t have much time to flay the new prisoners, he could decide to burn them and make fun of the Red Priest and her religion.
I agree it would have more impact if they burn Rickon and Meera, for instance, but I hope it doesn’t happen.
I’m 99% sure one of them will be Tormund, because…there is no because. Ramsay is just a psycho and he enjoy to torture people that’s why.
House Reed is going to fight for the Starks … so, if Meera returns home… she could be around. It’s possible. We haven’t seen them in a long time.
This is GOT – it’s going to be people the audience likes, and I’ll probably_almost_ rage-quit the show over it once again and people will tell me, what the Hell did you expect, this is GOT. I’m tired of it already.
Theon would be the obvious choice – where’s the shock in that?
Sansa and Rickon should be safe, I think. Osha and Meera though? Seem like exactly the kind of character DD deem expendable enough to kill off for shock value…
Equally shocking: Brienne and Pod. They might still be in the area, and Martin seems poised to kill them off in his version too.
But while all of this would surely be horribly demoralizing for the TV-show audience, we shouldn’t forget that the main purpose is that It should be demoralizing for the Northern armies – Alliser Thorne? But assuming they’re led by Jon Snow again, how demoralizing would they find that?
Also, I think the wildling contigent would play a large enough role in the battle of the bastards, to make Thormund a pretty effective choice. I can’t say how much it would bother the rest of the Northern armies, but it would definitely bother Jon Snow, which would probably be Ramsay’s main purpose anyway.
So my guess would be Davos and Thormund. How’s that for demoralizing?
Wild Speculation: Ramsey Bolton has found Rickon and Osha then flays/burns them during the Battle of the Bastards.
Someone “in the know” already said Rickon is not one of the bodies on the crosses.
I really hope the Umbers are tricking the Boltons and hiding Rickon and Osha. They should be with them a long time ago, unless Osha decided to take Rickon somewhere else.
Am I the only one who thinks the picture of the two kids sword-fighting in Winterfell is not necessarily two boys? The young kid facing the camera is possibly a young girl with short hair (Lyanna?) I’m not convinced that is a boy. And wouldn’t the fighting and tomboy-ish nature of her character fit with the image that we see?
I wondered that, too. That would be a perfect way to introduce Lyanna to the story.
it’s ned and benjen. the two kids cast in those roles were sebastian croft (young ned) and michael nevin(benjen).
Actually my first instinct (as a book reader) was that it’s Lyanna and Benjen. In ADWD,
one of Bran’s visions has Lyanna easily beating Benjen in a wooden sword fight at Winterfell.
I honestly think that they are done with killing Starks from now on, and this season is when the Starks start to get their revenge.
I really hope GOT/ASOIAF doesn’t devolve into a big revenge story in the second act. Killing Boltons and Freys is secondary to protecting Westeros from the White Walkers.
I like how Joffrey was poisoned by LF/Tyrells and Tywin died at his own son’s hands rather than Nymeria’s wolfpack eating them. Please don’t have this season and next season full of revenge killings!
They have to kill first the Boltons and Freys before getting near Kings Landing and kill Cersei …I want Jon + Sansa (Littlefinger + Vale) to kill the Boltons, Tullys + Arya + Nymeria to kill the Freys …. But I believe the Wall will fall and Lannisters (because of Jaime) + Starks will have to fight together against White Walkers…
I dont think jon could take ramsay one v one. He almost died fighting karl fookin tanner from gin alley. The skills jon posesses are militarized and orthodox. Ramsay on the other hand fights just like the fookin legend. I would put a hundo on ramsay in a 1v1
No … Jon had more practice since then … He killed a Then and a White Walker …
Jon learned from that fight, or did you forget he smashed the magnar of the thenns with hammer? he’s learned to fight dirty since then.
Jon would no question!!!! Ramsay wouldn’t stand a chance!
I think Ramsay will burn Tormund and Davos on the crosses…and he will kill Rickon somehow…that will started the battle.
I think its Ned and Robert. Lyanna would be great to see as a tomboy in her youth. The harrenhall mystery revealed to be her would also be epic. Also that would tie in perfect with R&L=J
Great job to all at WIC!!! Really good observations!!! Thanks for all the time it took to look at every pic and detail!!!
THIRTEEN WEEKS? Jesus, I knew it was going on for a while but THIRTEEN WEEKS? Wow. Hardhome took about 20 days, no? Episode 9 is going to be glorious!
I read the last sentence (an specifically the word glorious) in the voice Will Farrell uses in the movie “Old School” after he’s shot with a tranquilizer dart when talking about Blue after he dies. I hope that’s exactly how you intended it.
Some good speculation here. VF also has an article (by Joanna Robinson, who does the excellent “Storm of Spoilers” podcast) covering some of the same things, and more:
*pay heed to the comment about Ser Friendzone and Daario wielding naked steel in the halls of Vaes Dothrak and the implications of that
