All signs point to Game of Thrones Season 5 filming being underway

“The end of July” has been the only answer given as to when

Season 5 would begin filming this year. The end of July has arrived, and as of this week, all signs are pointing to filming already being underway in Northern Ireland.

Downtown Radio shared a picture of a familiar pink ‘GOT’ sign spotted at Scrabo Tower near Newtownards in County Down, which garnered a few comments claiming that signs were also up in Toome and Carryduff. A Twitter user also reported spotting signs in the shadow of the tower as early as the 19th.

Scrabo Tower stands 125 feet (38 meters) high and is topped by a number of turrets. In April of this year the tower was deemed unsafe for visitors due to heavy water damage to its electrical supply and lighting, and has remained closed to the public since. This could mean that the tower was or will be used for exterior shots only.

Maisie Williams also dropped a huge hint via Instagram that she was getting ready to start filming on Season 5. The actress shared all of her jewellery and festival bands she had accumulated over her summer holidays, accompanied by the caption,

“Removing jewellery and cutting off festival bands can only mean one thing.. #GoT5.”

While I disagree with Maisie’s approach to the British Airways incident, she is bang on. BA cannot have their cake and eat it – it is discrimination against those 16-18 year olds. Fair play to her for raising awareness of yet another money-grabbing ploy from the worst airline in Britain.

And she has a point btw. The barkeeper could just ask for an ID if he/she thinks someone isn’t supposed to get drinks. That’s how it should be handled in every other bar, why not in the business lounge of British Airways? Teenagers and even kids are allowed in bars, they’re just not allowed to drink.

Back on topic…be interesting to see what scene the tower may be used for. Be very surprised if it was the Tower of Joy as that’s in Dorne and the architecture seems all wrong.

It looks lke it’ll be either somewhere in the North, Riverlands or Iron Islands. My money is it’s either the

Shadow Tower or being used in the scene where Balon meets his demise (hopefully featuring Euron!)

I’m always sending @Axechucker information on Twitter and he never seems to get it! So who else should I send all my insider info to?

The whole British Airways thing is stupid. She got mistreated and complained and suddenly tabloids talked about it because she’s an actress. It’s pretty obvious that if you are sold a business class ticket that allows you to go to the lounge you should be able to.

Also, not to high jack this thread but can someone point me in the direction of a site that lists all the books related to the Game of Thrones material. I have tried but get lost on some of the books that just have partial stories in them. Can I find all the dunk and egg stories in one book?

Right, I always forget about it, because it only tells a story in a very broad sense, but GRRM is credited as the author, so technically you are right.

Very briefly on the Maisie thing – it’s really no big deal, I can understand why she got frustrated. Having a business class ticket usually entitles you to the lounge and she was probably excited about going there – to be turned away based on age, when all she wanted to do is sit quietly, is annoying. However, I fully understand BA’s position – the bar is completely unattended and you can help yourself to anything. Imagine the news story if a 17 year old got wasted in a BA lounge?! They did the right thing turning her away.

No problem. One last thing: I just found out that they split Legends II: (New Short Novels by the Masters of Modern Fantasy) in 2004 into Legends II: Dragon, Sword, and King and Legends II: Shadows, Gods, and Demons. So if you don’t want to buy all the other stories, buy Legends II: Dragon, Sword and King, that’s the one with The Sworn Sword in it.

Season 5 is already in motion and no release date for book 6.

The fact they’re being so tight lipped about Season 5 tells me they’re definitely going into Winds of Winter territory (and making a few changes along the way) also probably setting up the big reveal for Jon so they’re more worried about spoilers for this season than in the past.

Holy shit, they pulled the same nonsense with Legends I as well… Here you can by the complete edition, Legends: Stories By The Masters of Modern Fantasy, or by the right mass market paperback, Legends: Discworld, Pern, Song of Ice and Fire, Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, Wheel of Time, if you can find it. – I can see why you were confused now. ;-)

That tower really made me think of Standfast in Dunk and Egg II: The Sworn Sword.

I’m guessing it will be similar to ‘winter is coming’. Something that is relevant to the series and is catchy. One thing is for sure, once their site is up and running, I won’t be visiting wic.net any more, unless it is to promote the new site in the comment section.

Obligatory complaint about an apparent lack of Greyjoys!

Are they really cutting most all new characters from AFFC and ADWD? I was looking forward to the Griff/Young Griff storyline. I heard for the longest Arianne, the Greyjoys, and others may be cut. WTF is Tyrion gonna do? I will be pissed if they do. Why would they do that. They adopted Oberyn’s arc and he was new. Are they so desperate to separate themselves from the source material. Why didn’t they just create their own show? You use GRRM’s stuff to grab the audience and right when we get to the heart of it, they pull this stuff out of their ass. If these cuts come to fruition, the show will become something different all together. Call it A Song of D+D.

There is nothing which annoys me more than age discrimination. She is not a RETARD. Age is just a number. Discrimination should never be ok. If you change age for gender, race, religion or whatever there would be an onslaught. To say all 17 year olds are incapable of drinking alcohol is absolutely absurd. Furthermore it’s none of the governments business. People have the right to decide that for themselves. The government has to educate children (and with that i dont mean 17 year old) when they are in elementary school about potential dangers so that these things can happen in a natural and responsible manner…

The one thing want to see from Fansided before I leave WiC is a proper goodbye for Fabio, HMR, Oz and Fury. Regardless of what happened, Winter, Fury, Fabio, HMR and to a lesser extent Oz made this site what it is today. The community had a part in it as well of curse, but they held it all together. Fansided owes them so much when it comes to they place in the GoT fandom.

Seriously, Fansided, say goodbye to Fury, Fabio, HMR and Oz and wish them luck, they deserve as much. If you do that, I will leave here with a wave and a smile.

FaBio,Fury,HearMeRoar, and Oz informed Fansided that they intended to leave and gave their notice, offering to stay through Comic-Con, but were fired on the spot instead. They are starting a new site that is supposed to be like the old WIC.net, or at least that is the intent.

We have to make sure to post news of their departure and links to their announcement tumblr page, and eventually new links not just on this thread but ALL THREADS. and on their fb page or whatever else…

again I urge Fan Sided/WiC to make an announcement post asap since they pulled the 4 main writers’ ‘powers’ over the site and they cannot announce it themselves here or probably anything WiC related.

most of us have been coming here from the beginning of the site…daily..maybe multiple times a day for years now. the site we’ve come to love was in large part built by these writers. they can’t just push it under the rug and hope fans don’t notice.

Considering it’s summer in N. Ireland, if they are filming at Scrabo Tower in the next few weeks, it can logically be only one locale, the ToJ.

Looking at the impressive pic below of the tower, with it located high atop that rocky prominence, it facilitates the cgi artisit in creating the mountainous backdrop necessary.

I figure they will have to construct a weirwood nearby. after all Bran can only see events near one, perhaps they can cgi a weirwood growing around and within the tower, enabling Bran to see events within, which would be quite visually impressive.

Quintin Castle is more than likely House Umber.

hopefully that is the TOJ and they bring back Sean Bean to film a flashback to the battle though Bran’s visions

The architecture and setting is all wrong for the Tower of Joy, It’s in Dorne as as they’re using Spain as a location for Dorne this isn’t going to fit.

It should be somewhere in the North, Riverlands or Iron Islands. If I was a betting many I’d say either The Shadow Tower or perhaps be used in the scene where

Just found out about the main staff leaving.

I personally wasn’t too upset with the changes here so far, but this is too much. I’ve been here since 2008 or 2009, but I can’t imagine WiC without any of the original staff. I’ll definitely be joining their new site next week.

Sure enjoy reading the comments at the start of the year when it was announced that Phil joined with fansided.

Phil claims it would allow him more time to focus on content instead of the technical aspects and less than 2 months later…he’s gone.

Pretty much everyone voiced concern knowing it was a doomed move and sure enough, it came crashing down like most predicted it would.

I don’t care if it is 2 guys from Kansas that own the company, they still came in like a big business claiming to help and just ended up ruining what made this place special by trying to maximize profits from us fans.

GeekFurious gave this move less than a year to kill the site and it turns out he was spot on.

Funny if you look at ASoIaF art for ToJ, it looks typical European medieval and not Moorish, so it’s all in the mind of the reader how they want to imagine it.

Furthermore the ToJ is nearer the border with The Reach than near the heart of Dorne itself, thereby its architecture could be more Westerosi. Think Pyrenees mountains. Below is a few pics of castles in the Pyrenees, one on the French side the other the Spanish side.

Plus the landscape around it doesn’t make me think of that part of the world. They should make it noticeably different to define the area it took place in.

Yeah. Fansided really did kill WIC. I have been going to WIC almost every day for each of the last 2 years, but it is now filled with so much worthless drivel. They went for quantity over quality. I wish you well, but instead of a site of fans for fans, it became artificial and mass produced gimmick articles. Take care WIC.

I like the Golden Tower, but it appears from that pic that it is in an urban environment.

The article mentioned Strabo interior closed due to damage, so exterior shots only. A lonely tower high on a rocky prominence could only be ToJ, I cannot think of any other structure from the books save for Stannis campaign in the North, but it is Winter by then, with snow, which precludes it.

Any GoT news is good news, from my perspective. The internet is a fickle mistress anyway.

i don’t really care so much about the selling out to corporate america part that much, will never begrudge a person a chance to make themselves more money, and i personally don’t find it that hard to sift through the things that don’t interest me, having said that, i am glad they are going back to their roots and choosing to keep true to themselves (hopefully that’s the motivation) since that is closer to my own personal choices in life.

Don’t be so ridiculous. It’s not discrimination, it’s the law! To lump this together with race or gender discrimination (or other types of genuine age discrimination which happen all the time) is really silly. 18 is the LEGAL age for drinking in the UK – of course it is completely arbitrary, but they have to choose an age, and the age when you officially (in the eyes of the law) become an adult seems sensible. What would you prefer? Each person is somehow means tested to see if they are ‘ready’ for alcohol?

And anyway, whether you agree with the law or not, what choice does BA have in this situation? Again what do you expect them to do – wave through any 16 or 17 year olds they think (based on an instant judgement) will be fine with their booze?! Don’t be so naïve. BA is a massive corporation with huge responsibilities – OF COURSE they can’t be seen to condone illegal alcohol intake for under 18s. And as the bars in their lounges are self-service and unmanned (and absolutely amazing by the way), there’s no way of policing it. I’m sure Maisie will cope with waiting another few months. It’s luxury enough to be on business class travel at that age.

There has been a post for Griff too if I remember correctly but I totally agree with you. Casting suggestions are one of about a hundred things which could definitely be improved, especially considering all this insignificant, GOT unrelated stuff which has been arround since fansided took over.

I think that they made a big mistake by never even trying to listen to the people at WIC. I’m not saying that they should consider every isolated opinion but there were major concerns first when Winter told us the news and later in just about every “drinks of Westeros” section and on various other occasions. It could well be that they never even listened to their writers considering the change in climate Fury reported on.

Trouble is if fansided is determined to continue like this they will not only lose the fantastic four loyalists but sooner or later they will scare away a good deal of new readers or those who decide to stay behind because of other writers like Zack and Lightbringer. I’ll be leaving this site too as soon as the new site is on but it might be I’ll check back now and then, just out of curiosity.

I think it’s past time that fansided makes ammends for what they have done to this site. A post in which they clarify the current situation and at least say goodbye to Fury, FaB, Hear me Roar and OZ would be appropriate though I’m afraid that will never happen.

They could edit/CGI out the landscape I guess. For me Scrabo just doesn’t look like the Tower of Joy. Doesn’t fit with Dorne’s charaacter. I have a new favourite for it now!
