Game of Thrones Question

For those of you have read the book and seen the show, why did they make Renly gay in the show? i've only read the first book but does this come out in the second book or something?

It was confusing for me in the beginning as well but once you start to pick up on Renly's behaviors (i.e. his flashy clothes and fashion sense), it all comes together! And the Rainbow Guard! XD
