Freddie Prinze Jr. Talks Mutant X
April 2003

Freddie Prinze Jr. told The Continuum that he hasn't seen the episode of Mutant X that he has written - yet.

"One Step Closer," an episode spotlighting Brennan, airs in syndication this week.

"My wife doesn't want me to see the finished episode until it airs this weekend," Prinze said, referring to Buffy the Vampire Slayer star and Scooby-Doo co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar.

"Seth (Howard, Tribune's creative executive) sent me the dailies and the show looks amazing. They did a great job with my script and I can't wait to see the final result."

Prinze's connection with Mutant X was through Howard, with whom he is friends.

"We had been talking about Mutant X early on back when he was developing the series," Prinze said. "He knew how much I loved the idea of the show and how excited I was to see a show about superheroes."

"Then, after the first season, he suggested that I write an episode. We talked back and forth about the characters and he knew that I had a real feel for the show. He then read some other stuff that I had written and said that I would be perfect to write a freelance episode. I said yes and he put me to work with the writing staff soon after that."

Prinze hasn't been shy about his love of comics.

"Yeah, I still read them," he said, listing Silver Surfer and The Thing among his favorite characters. "Actually, I just started re-reading an old Thor storyline that I am really enjoying."

Mutant X is Prinze's first television writing experience, but probably won't be his last.

"I am writing a lot these days," he said. "Working on some movie and television ideas. I would love to write another episode of Mutant X...if they ask me back."

In other Mutant X news, the second-season finale is set to air in syndication the week of May 12.

In the episode, a reluctant Shalimar must reconnect with her estranged father when the Mutant X teams learns his company is involved in genetic testing and manipulation.

Eugene Robert Glazer plays Shalimar's father. Also look for the return of Mason Eckhart, again played by Tom McCamus.

The episode was written by Peter Mohan, the show's supervising producer and head writer, and was directed by producer Jonathan Hackett.

Sarah Michelle Gellar, the stake-wielding star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and her fiancé, Freddie Prinze Jr., Mr. She's All That, are as mismatched as grilled-eggplant-and-chocolate-syrup sandwiches - the favorite meal of Shaggy, the scruffy sidekick in the couple's latest collaboration, Scooby-Doo. Gellar wakes before 6:30 a.m.; Prinze can doze until noon. She reads Oprah's Book Club selections; he devours comic books. She loves to travel; he kissed the ground upon returning from the five-month-long Scooby-Doo...

All About Men
Summer 2000

Freddie Prinze, Jr. tells us who he's in love with this summer.

Cosmo: So are you the typical Pisces, you can't make up your mind?

Freddie Prinze, Jr.: No, I'm very laid back. I'm just cooled out. Pretty much everything is cool with me. If somebody says, 'You want to eat Japanese food now?' I'm like, 'Yeah, sure.' And I really want to. Somebody says, 'You want steak?' I'm like, 'Oh, that's cool.' I go with the flow and pretty much remain cool.

C: Do you like food?

FPJ: I love food. My favorite thing to do in the world is eat. Absolutely.

C: What foods do you...

Stuffing his lower lip with Kodiak chewing tobacco ("It's my one vice"), Freddie Prinze Jr. relaxed in his trailer between takes while filming Nailed Right In, a drama about three young men involved in a struggle with a Brooklyn Mob boss. Prinze spoke with Scoop about his career, wife Sarah Michelle Gellar and...gray hair?

People Magazine: People say this is your first "adult" role in a film.

Freddie: People have to understand: Growing up as a Puerto Rican in this business is very hard unless you want [your character] to sell drugs, or be a pimp, or carry a gun. And...
