Fanpop Article: OK Fanpop... We NEED Moderators. NOW.

I hate those darned internet predators, don't you?

I just logged onto Fanpop about a half hour ago and discovered something extremely profane and inappropriate on the YouTube spot. Due to it's heavily pornographic material, the video was deleted shortly thanks to several reports from some handy fellow Fanpoppers.

It was submitted by a user of the name bon8699. I reported this user 3 times and I expect him to be banned for a long, long time.

The reason I am so annoyed that this was submitted is that this is not some pornography site. And this is most certaintly not NewGrounds, where you can submit images like this as much as you please without so much as a hint of being banned. This is Fanpop, people. We are a clean and all-age-friendly website. And the fact that content like this was submitted so easily and lasted long enough for perhaps thousands of youngsters to view really does not help our reputation.

So I believe now is the time to get moderators onto the site other then the F4. Despite the F4 being extremely dedicated to the site, it's simply not enough to rid the site of content like this entirely. And yes, users can submit reports of this content, but the content may stay there for a long long time (due to, like I said, the F4 not being able to handle everything at one time.)

So perhaps if we got moderators onto the site we could be a much cleaner site, and our reputation would be much higher among parents. If we made some of our most dedicated users mods, we could handle this type of garbage and exterminate all of those dirty internet predators.

IsabellaAzuria yep debs, I have to agree with the others, since there are so many 13yearolds on this site and many people who don't like porn. If you want to watch porn, watch it on a porn site. Fanpop is a friendly place for all ages. A porn spot? no thanks, then I'll get off fanpop forever.

Lol, meh, I'm alright with people watching porn, it's a bit weird here on Fanpop thoug. I went to look at the recently created pending spots and there was a spot for porn, it's gone now.

waichingliu81 amazondebs- well, it may not be a huge issue for many people such as yourself, but there are youngsters using this site as well and of whom may stumble across pornography links. as isabella rightly said, if you like that sort of thing, then watch it on an adult site. this is not the ideal place to post material such as that, and neither is it appropriate either, according to the rules.

Snerkie DoctorSpud, this isn't actually the first time inappropriate content has been posted and sure more moderators would help but that doesn't mean they could be on the moment it's posted. I have been on plenty of sites that there are moments where no mods are on because of time zones, commitments, etc. This sort of stuff is going to happen and just needs to be reported, that's the best that can be done. It happens every where, it's not just like Fanpop is the only place that gets this. Also i don't think Debs is encouraging people to post inappropriate content, i think she's trying to say that there's no need to throw our arms up in the air, wave them madly and start running around like headless chickens.

germany123 ^^INDEED and i am a little puzzled why people are deliberately misunderstanding and why all comments are targeted at debs. we all agree the video should be removed..it was removed but i saw it, it was two clothed girls on a bed touching each other and you all sound like a chain saw massacre was posted :S i think "porn" is a little too general to be the right term...but its not like watching two people having sex is going to disturb children forever (and uhm..13!? seriously!? i mean 13 year olds know how it works...) i disagree with some types of porn but this wasnt even enough to make me raise my eyebrow...

papa Appreciate the time you took to write down your thoughts. FWIW, we are always looking at ways to improve the moderation (whilst juggling all the other tasks of running the site). Spam is also a constant battle and other problems on the site (we recently took a number of measures to curb the annoyance/bad matching of Hulu -- it's not a perfect fix yet, but it has helped). Looking at an expanded pool of moderators is definitely on the radar as is figuring out better ways to deal with the recent rash of link spammers -- believe me Germany123 it drives me nuts too! I get to see all your reports everyday ;-)

tushtush I'm not sure I agree with this. What I've always loved about fanpop is the way the community is so naturally good natured that we're responsible enough to take this kind of thing in our own hands. That kind of content is so rare, I've only ever seen porn orientated videos on here once and I've been using this website for almost two years.... I think having our every move moderated by some self-righteous prude would take away some of the 'community spirit' of fanpop. The content was removed shortly after it was posted, which shows that we all report bad content and it's all taken into account, and that the vast majority of us (like, 99%) do not post that kindo thing.

suzzieqws I trust nearly all Fanpop users. Most everyone on here is exceptionally well mannered and respectful to everyone else's opinions and ideas. I would hope that the site would not need moderators, but because there are people that do feel like they can infringe on others standards it is something that should be actively considered. I know several people out there have no problem with pornography, I will not take away your right to view that sort of thing. But putting it on a site where people trust NOT to find it, and have no desire to observe it, is infringing upon their decision not to watch it. If you want go watch porn go onto a site that is made for it. Don't put it up on a site where people are trying to avoid that sort of material.

Cammie awesomedebs, shame on you ... a porno spot?! I didn't see the video in question but if it has been removed then obviously the F4 saw that it was inappropriate material for the site. It clearly states under the Fanpop terms and conditions that "pornographic or material of sexually explicit nature" is not acceptable an shall be removed. And rightly so! There is plenty of porno sites around, I'm sure, for those who want to view that type of thing. This is supposed to be a clean, wholesome family-like site. I'm no prude or Ms holier-than-thou here, but I do not in any way condone users submitting such content. I might enjoy having sex BUT I've never gotten off on 'perving' on others doing it! EDIT: just to add ... I'm so damned frustrated with Hulu putting their crap (always miscategorized)everywhere that now every single time I see 1 or 100 of their miscategorized or inappropriate videos I report it!

hm94991 Cammie, I agree with debs. Prehaps there should be a porn spot. I know this is mostly a kids website.. but there are a fair share of adult popers aswell. I thinf the spot should be made. And there should be a big 18 or older sign before the person enters, if the persons profile says otherwise, don't let them on.

amazondebs ha ha ha ha germany there was directed at me as only jay seems to get my sense of humor even good old cam doesn't seem to realise i was joking about the porn spot, sorry hm94991 people keep saying this is a young person's site.....well actually there is a limit of age 13 (13 may sound young but it's only 3 years off the legal age to actually have sex) and by age 13 they have all seen the sex education videos, fanpop's not there to blind there eyes from all material, if porn gets on to the site, it reported and then gone, it wouldn't be possible for moderators to check every piece of content as it's posted so a user would have to view it first, to report it, that's the whole point of the age limit, no? anyways like i said i was just kidding and jeffersonian....come on everyone knows all good porn is gay porn ....see what i did there, another one of my jokes....kinda

Cammie hm, my concern isn't just because this is "mainly a kids' site" because I do realize that most 10-year-olds and over are aware of what sex is. It is my opinion that Fanpop should not be used to view pornographic material. As I've said before^ there are enough sleazy sites for that kind of viewing. I'm sorry that I don't seem to get excited about porno stuff but I just don't. I didn't when I was 18 so I'm not gonna start now that I'm a middle-aged crone. amazondebs well i am opposed to having porn on the site just cause i have my identity on here LOL < note the lol :P but i don't think it's a huge problem and i don't get why people are so upset, it get's removed as soon as it's reported and if someone sees it they can just report it, they don't have to watch it lol some of the comment here are like reading a guardian article about how porn is the devil himself XD try say that quickly ;)

Hello fellow Fanpoppers!

Just wanted to alert you to some recent changes made on Fanpop as well as a few things that have been on the site for the last couple of weeks that we hadn't necessarily announced officially.

New Navigation Bar
We've changed the navigation bar across the top of the site. You'll see a couple of new links up there: inbox and updates. how to and how not to advertise your spot

okay straight down to buisness, frankly I dislike picks saying "will you join this spot" or messages from people advertising sites and spots. If people have a real interest in the spot they will find it themselves, same goes for websites but i understand that there's no point to a spot if your the only member and you have no one to talk about your passion with and since we're all one big fanpop family the more of us the merrier a spot generally is, so rather than whining about it i have decided to offer up some solutions. There is many different rants on Fanpop etiquette but one i havent seen is an article on the questions titled
HELP ME!!!1 These questions just put me in a terrible mood as do the questions where you cant understand what they are saying

    I try to add a lot of quality content to this site, and I would like to think I succeed. However, there is no way to know for sure without your help. A question that constantly plagues my mind is, "What do you think?"

Props.

Certainly one of the minor cooler things about Fanpop. They allow users to add a prize alongside a message to friends in eight different and colorful little medals. Awesome, right?

And they are! But since I have to make everything over-complicated beyond belief, today I'm going to show you some statistics regarding the Prop System we know and love.

These statistics will SCIENTIFICALLY show you guys how often certain props are picked, judging by my collection of props.
