Happy Birthday Fanpop!
Happy Birthday Fanpop!
Five years ago today, I was sitting in my living room with link, link, and link when together we pressed a button on a keyboard and released Fanpop to the world. We had no idea what was in store for us or for the site, but we had a dream to build something really cool and we hoped others would like it. For months and months we toiled away at our computers designing and coding what you all see today. We talked endlessly about features and ideas. Papa and I mocked them up and Cliff and Michael programmed them into reality. You grow pretty tight when you spend that many days and nights together. We went from being Fansters to Fanspots and finally launched as Fanpop on August 1, 2006. We had a small number of test users that had been using our closed beta site but now we were opening the doors to the public and it was scary. What if no one came? What if people hated the site? What if we had to give up and go get desk jobs at some office cube farm again? So many "what ifs" overwhelmed us that day.

After our initial launch and some press from sites like link and link the first few months things were pretty quiet and we were honestly pretty scared that it wasn't going to work out. We knew that we had a good product, but we didn't know how to get users to come. Slowly but surely though, the fans found their way here. Twilight fans came. Harry Potter fans came. Justin Bieber Fans came. One Tree Hill fans came. Glee fans came. Michael Jackson fans came. More and more fans found their way to Fanpop and before we knew it we had thousands of clubs and millions of fans coming to the site. The best part about it was that fans around the world were connecting with fellow fans who shared their passions and were making new friends. Fanpop was actually growing into a bona fide community and the ultimate site for fans.

Fast forward to August 1, 2011 and today we are the #372 biggest site on the internet according to link. According to our internal metrics we have over 13 million users a month around the world visiting Fanpop. But more importantly, when I interact with users or read comments on our wall, I hear all the time how much people love the website and how they really feel at home here. It means more to the Fanpop four that we created a place on the web that didn't exist before which people can't live without now. That's pretty special and so are each and every one of our fantastic Fanpoppers. We feel like proud fathers who have watched our little website grow into this amazing network of fan clubs which are alive with excited fans who love to talk about all sorts of topics that we could have never imagined. We know that without all of our awesome and dedicated users, we wouldn't be where we are today. It's the fans that make Fanpop and we will never forget our commitment to you guys. We've spent the past five years building features and designing the website for you. But we're not done yet folks! So keep on Fanpopping, because there's much more in store for the years to come!

This section of my Fanpop User's Guide covers links, the lifeblood of Fanpop, and was last substantively edited on 4 June 2013.

So, you've registered on the site and now you want to add some content to your favorite spots. The vast majority of the stuff on fanpop is in the form of links which point to content in other places, whether they are articles, galleries, videos, games, or any other sort of content you can find online.

Check before you add!
Any time that you are about to add content to Fanpop, you should check first to make sure that the content isn't already linked from the site (at least...

Yes, yes it is.
Yes, yes it is.
As some of you may know, I often suffer from grammar-induced rage blackouts. These can be triggered by anything from a misplaced apostrophe to the incorrect usage of "your" and "you're". So, I decided to do something about it.. mostly because I'm afraid the next dangling modifier I come across might send me spiraling into a violent rampage the likes of which have never been seen.

I understand that a lot of Fanpoppers are not native English speakers, and thus might not have as good a hold on our sometimes ridiculously complicated grammatical rules. Obviously, I can't fault them for their mistakes....

Right, I have been thinking about this. I have been thinking about certain things on Fanpop recently and as much as I love this place there are certain things that irk me.

Hate Spots
I've seen spots that are about hating a certain thing. I thought this place was more about sharing things we enjoy so we can give each other images, links, videos, etc not "oh I hate this and this and this". It doesn't make anything friendly.

Me Me Me Spots
I mean no offence to anyone that has these kinds of spots and has created them but Fanpop isn't MySpace or any of those other social networks. It's a different...

Okay everybody on Fanpop is a fan of something, you have to be, But what is a true fan? Well, I'll tell you.
According to Webster's Dictionary, a Fan is
A:
Function:    noun
Etymology:    probably short for fanatic
1 : an enthusiastic devotee (as of a sport or a performing art) usually as a spectator
2 : an ardent admirer or enthusiast (as of a celebrity or a pursuit) <science-fiction fans>

This is a great definition of a fan of a baseball team or a specific person, such as the Yankees or Brad Pitt. But is that really what the Fans on Fanpop are? No....

I guess you're already kind of resolved about this, but I thought I'd tell you my standing on it anyway.

If I receive messages and wall posts asking for me to join spots or 'fan' content from Fanpoppers who I have had no prior contact with, and I'm busy, I simply ignore their pleas, with the safe assumption that they've sent them to dozens of people, and even if I didn't want to upset them by being non-responsive, they wouldn't notice.
However, when I have nothing on my hands (Fanpop-wise), I tend to check out their content and see if it's any good, and if I think it contributes to the club well,...

or: "Basic information about removing your account"

Special thanks to link, our fanpop guinea pig. (or should I say lab rat?)

Removing your own account is a pretty new feature, many people may not be aware of it yet.
If you go to Edit Profile and scroll all the way down, you'll find:
If you'd like to remove your account, click here.

Now what does this mean?

If you delete your account, you must know that:
Your contributions will not be deleted.

All your images, links, comments, forum posts, wall posts, replies remain on fanpop, next to your username.
If you click on that username however, you will be...

The Fanpop website has been around for quite a few years now- 3 years in fact, and whilst it is still relatively unknown compared to the likes of Myspace, Facebook and the so-called phenomenon known as Twitter, it is still for me THE website that I pay a visit to on a regular basis.

Fanpop was formerly a small relatively unknown website, whose number of members have grown, month by month, year by year.

With features such as uploading images, submitting website links to other articles and You Tube videos to writing articles, opinion pieces and posting your works of art and creating trivia questions,...
