Happy Birthday Fanpop!
Happy Birthday Fanpop!
Five years ago today, I was sitting in my living room with link, link, and link when together we pressed a button on a keyboard and released Fanpop to the world. We had no idea what was in store for us or for the site, but we had a dream to build something really cool and we hoped others would like it. For months and months we toiled away at our computers designing and coding what you all see today. We talked endlessly about features and ideas. Papa and I mocked them up and Cliff and Michael programmed them into reality. You grow pretty tight when you spend that many days and nights together. We went from being Fansters to Fanspots and finally launched as Fanpop on August 1, 2006. We had a small number of test users that had been using our closed beta site but now we were opening the doors to the public and it was scary. What if no one came? What if people hated the site? What if we had to give up and go get desk jobs at some office cube farm again? So many "what ifs" overwhelmed us that day.

After our initial launch and some press from sites like link and link the first few months things were pretty quiet and we were honestly pretty scared that it wasn't going to work out. We knew that we had a good product, but we didn't know how to get users to come. Slowly but surely though, the fans found their way here. Twilight fans came. Harry Potter fans came. Justin Bieber Fans came. One Tree Hill fans came. Glee fans came. Michael Jackson fans came. More and more fans found their way to Fanpop and before we knew it we had thousands of clubs and millions of fans coming to the site. The best part about it was that fans around the world were connecting with fellow fans who shared their passions and were making new friends. Fanpop was actually growing into a bona fide community and the ultimate site for fans.

Fast forward to August 1, 2011 and today we are the #372 biggest site on the internet according to link. According to our internal metrics we have over 13 million users a month around the world visiting Fanpop. But more importantly, when I interact with users or read comments on our wall, I hear all the time how much people love the website and how they really feel at home here. It means more to the Fanpop four that we created a place on the web that didn't exist before which people can't live without now. That's pretty special and so are each and every one of our fantastic Fanpoppers. We feel like proud fathers who have watched our little website grow into this amazing network of fan clubs which are alive with excited fans who love to talk about all sorts of topics that we could have never imagined. We know that without all of our awesome and dedicated users, we wouldn't be where we are today. It's the fans that make Fanpop and we will never forget our commitment to you guys. We've spent the past five years building features and designing the website for you. But we're not done yet folks! So keep on Fanpopping, because there's much more in store for the years to come!

Okay, this has been brewing in me for a while and I think that now is the time to bring it all out into the open.... I speak of the burgeoning conflict that is the rating-to-comment ratio.

Lets break this down; On numerous occasions, I have added various links to many different sites, and always venture back to see what people think of the link, or their reaction to it (be that positive, negative, or even criticism towards me). But over the last few months it has become increasingly obvious that people are rating the link, but leaving no comment!

The way I see it, its like breaking into your...

On some clubs this is not a problem. However in more active spots people tend to check mark the box so people will view their pick more. It is VERY stupid there is three types of picks spoiler, not spoiler, and ones that need to be marked spoiler. I shall now give some examples of each.

Ones that are marked but shouldn't be

1 link

2 link

3 link

AS you can see these when opened are just normal favorite character questions not spoiler.

Ones that need to be checked but aren't

1 link

2 link

3 link

Yes I created these in case
you were wondering.
They are innocent however i forgot to check the spoiler box so...

Spread the word about Fanpop to all your friends!
Spread the word about Fanpop to all your friends!
So you've stumbled upon Fanpop because you were Googling or clicked on a link somewhere. The next thing you know you start joining a few spots that you're a fan of...then more spots...and even more spots. For spots you can't find, you might even start creating new spots. Then you start adding videos, images and links to spots. You discover Picks and can't stop answering questions in all your spots (and even some spots that you're not even a fan of!). You start making picks and even writing soapbox articles. All of the sudden people are adding you as a fan and you're earning medals and getting...

I'm not leaving, munchkins..I know you are slightly disappointed now and were waiting for some eDrama (or happy to see me FINALLY desert the pop to live on my farm full time and stop clogging your "answers") but it's just boring old me sharing my thoughts on reporting. Forgive me..it's Sunday..and I had the time.
I sometimes stumble across obvious spam (yes, I'm talking aboot you chinese shoe and handbag sellers!) on this site that has been there for months and I wonder why it was never removed. I also see quizzes where people have been informed of a mistake and yet months later the wrong quiz...

So last night, August the 2nd/3rd, depending on where you were, I witnessed a phenomenon I have not seen on the internet for quite some time, I've seen glimmers of it, hints and comments, but I've not had it so blatantly thrust in my face until last night. I am, of course, talking about unity. No, not unity against a 'common enemy' or a 'troll' as many people on the internet assume is unity, but genuine "I can just click something to make someone feel a little better" kind of unity.

You see true believer, I have a faith in one thing, 'The small things count'. Whether it's just a passing 'hello',...

Yep, they do!
Yep, they do!
As a rule, I wouldn't make a big deal about this, but it has been bothering me for a long time. I understand the importance of correct grammar, spelling, and the use of the proper punctuation, and what I am about to say has nothing to do with this. I also understand having an opinion that differs with another person, but when somebody makes a pick or writes a comment it takes time and effort to do so. What bothers me is when people leave mean comments about how either their question is stupid or even how stupid the person is for making a pick. The reason we join spots and make picks is because...

STOP STEALING!
STOP STEALING!
This was originally posted in the One Tree Hill spot but a user asked that it be posted here as well. I post a lot of things to Fanpop, especially images. Something that in my opinion is very important, is giving credit where it is due. If you find something on the web and want to share it, then feel free to post it. However, it is extremely disrespectful to claim that you created that content if you didn`t or simply not bother to credit.

Lately I`ve been coming across a lot of images of say a celebrity where the user who uploaded the picture, gives themselves credit. It is certainly possible...

Since I've been reading so many articles about the levels of Fanpop users, and because this month is my one year anniversary of being on Fanpop, I've decided to set a list of goals in the upcoming year of Fanpop. You know, like New Years Resolutions, only a month earlier.

Well, I guess I should tell my story. I first came to Fanpop by a chance encounter. Back when I was on my Canada craze, I googled everything that had to do with the television shows 6teen and Total Drama Island. I was on about the sixth page of the search when I saw "6teen fan spot." I immediately clicked the link, wondering...
