Honestly I have no clue how it works; I've been under the impression that it's random. I have articles with like 7 fans that aren't on the list but ones with none are?
Gold must also be earned by people commenting on and reacting to content, or even just by viewing it. I would expect content which'd been fanned to be in the highest gold earners though - I agree with you there.
I have no clue, but I think that's possibly happen if it made the front page (if anything that we add doesn't have any fans or faves)
It happens to me when I add a video of Pitch Perfect trailer and that video made the front page and suddenly it appear as all time gold produce.
