I've only read a couple of this type, but I swear these are the worst of the worst.

I probably have to go with self-inserts as well, even though I'm very tempted to choose OCs. But yeah, in every single fandom I've been in, the self-inserts tend to be of the worsest (please ignore the fact that is not a real word) quality.

I. Hate. Self-Inserts. You could try very hard to make an OC not a Mary-Sue, but for SIs, they are downright impossible not to make fake.

Okay, sure, there MIGHT be one or two Selfies that AREN'T Mary-Sues, but I haven't seen one yet.

Either way, I avoid them. And so do a whole lot of people.

Also, you put 'all-human' as a thing to avoid? I LOVE AH fanfics. They are just so... interesting in my fandom. :)

And what do you mean by 'freeverse style'?

^ Trust me, the majority all-human fics in the Harry Potter fandom makes me want to throw my laptop on the wall. Yes, it's that bad. Plus, when you've got characters with wands and magic, making them "human" is rather... boring.

Freeverse style is a form of poetry that tells a story. It's not a poetry, but it's not exactly a story either. Just somewhere in the middle. I personally love freeverses, they're so... different and unique!

OCs (Original Charac- ters)
TDI_Angel picked OCs (Original Characters) :
I avoid OCs a lot because in the two fandoms I'm mostly in, there's too much of a chance for a Mary-Sue. One of my fandoms has a lot of fans who are young and inexpirienced writers, so they tend to make Sues without realizing it (not all young writers do this, of course). In my other fandom, a majority of the characters you can write for are attractive men, and I see a LOT of Canon CharacterxOCxCanon Character love triangles in them... And I hate those things, so I tend to avoide them. Ugh.

See, I wrote an OC character since it was necessary for the plot of the story I'm writing, but ended up being so TERRIFIED of Mary Sue'ing her, I ended up borrowing a lot of inspiration from Ellen Page's fictional character in Hard Candy (minus the killer sociopath aspect) I liked her complexities, flaws, and general look, so I borrowed them and then admitted it in my authors note.

Yes, that technically made her not an OC- but at least she wasn't 'Stephenie Meyer' demented.

And OCs.
As for slash/female slash... I see no problem with it whatsoever :') Some of my favourite fics are slash, simply because they're written with more feeling, passion and overall better English than the rest.

I never read the self-inserts either but the script format drives me nuts. There isn't enough information on what is going on and you don't read what is going on in the characters head. I have to know the internal conflict when i read stories.

If I wanted to read about a real person stepping into a particular fandom, I'd write my own story. It would never get posted, but still.

I can't stand when canon is messed with so completely...
>>Slash/female slash
*Facepalms* How is this so high up? Homophobic much? Yeah, some if it's badly written, but I've read a tonne of bloody amazing slash and femmeslash. The quality of the writing has nothing to do with the sexual orientation of the characters. OTL

I always like writing OC stories because it helps me with the ideas of stories. My readers like the way I write because I NEVER write slash stories.

I really like slash...and OCs, when they're done right and not Mary Sues. And AU is pretty cool too.. But Self-insert bugs me.

Script format
elajsa picked Script format:
I don't think I've ever read a self-insert or all-human(I don't even know what that is)! I have read a script thing and I absolutely hate it!
For slash/femslash being so high on the top I don't think ppl chose that due to homophobia, but bc sometimes it's very hard picturing two really good characters of the same sex in a show/movie having sex! Like if Ron and Harry would all of the sudden tie the knot and having mind-blowing sex and adopt a baby or two. I don't watch Harry Potter(only saw the first two) or read, but I think many people here can relate to that example:P
I read a lot of femslash with my favorite character so I don't have a problem with it, though it was a little weird in the beginning! I'm just saying that it is understandable:)

And OC's as most (not all) tend to have Mary Sues and are poorly written. And half of the time they exist simply so the person could get involved with their favorite character and lead a picture perfect life in that book's universe. I mean I don't mind people doing that for fun or personal reasons. But when they get all serious about it...well most of them I just can't take seriously. However there are exceptions, I've read a few well-written ones. But typically when I see the OC or self-insert I click the back button.

I personally love slash/femslash! Bellamione and Swan Queen ftw!

I hate self-inserts. Personally, I think it's a bit selfish on the writer's part. Why do you get to be so important and honored to be inserted into a show/book/etc.? I also avoid script because it just doesn't give enough information. I also don't like songfics.
