[i]On Monday Night, November 25, 1991, an obituary came over the AP wire “Kiss Drummer Eric Carr has died of complications brought on by cancer. Carr joined Kiss in 1980 after the departure of original drummer Peter Criss, and recorded 8 albums with the band including last year’s ‘Hot in the Shade.’ Carr had suffered several setbacks since having a malignant tumor removed from his heart earlier this year. He was 41.”
I ended up reading this obituary 3 times to make sure it said what I thought it said. Eric Carr had passed away. You see, a few months back I had a chance...
On November 25, 1991, I got a call from a friend telling me that Eric Carr, KISS' drummer, had just died. I was blown away. Flipping on MTV, my fears were confirmed. Dead at 41 years old... this really sucked. I made up my mind that moment that if the funeral was anywhere in New York I was going to it.
The next day the New York Daily News reported Eric's death and info on where the funeral would be held. It would be in Middletown, NY. My grandparents live in Newburgh, NY, which is only about 10 miles from Middletown.
Yeah, I'm down and out, but don't count me out
Listen here babe, gonna show you what it's all about
It's time for love, and you're welcome to it
It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it
So here I am, do you want me now,
just show me where, and I'll show you how
I wanna know
No, no, no - don't say you won't if you will
No, no, no, no - don't say you've had your thrill
No, no, no - don't say you can't 'cause you can
Ten million stories in the city, ten million backs against the wall
Desperation's out tonight, you can cut it with a knife
Everybody wants to have it all
Well they tell you that the world is rough
But they never rocked it hard enough
Hey little Caesar, nobody messing with you
Hey little Caesar, go show 'em what you can do
Nobody said that it was pretty, you haven't got a penny or a prayer
You know it's gonna be a fight, if you wanna see your name in lights
Street hustler comes up to me one day
And I'm walkin' down the street, mindin' my own business
Now he looks me up and he looks me down and says
"Hey man, what be this" and "What be that" and "Why you gotta look like that?"
Well I just looked at him, I kinda laughed, I said
Hey man, I am cool, I am the Breeze
Haven't you heard, there's a new revolution
Gotta spread the word - too much confusion
All hell's breakin' loose - hey hey have you read the news
Oh yeah! WOW!
Does it cut like a knife?
Heard it all before
Ain't nobody's fool
In the heat of the night
Just gotta know the score
Hungry on the outside
Burning on inside
Don't make me beg for more... yeah
Can't feel the sting
Can't feel the bite
Don't give a damn
When lightning strikes
You know you can't see a thing
When you're looking through the eyes of love
Tell me once again now
