I suppose it's a form of reclaiming a word to make it less hurtful and almost ridiculing it, like queer or dyke. I'm a lesbian and I wouldn't mind if another lesbian called me a dyke and I would do likewise, maybe other people wouldn't, maybe that's just me. :)
