Ed Sheeran gushes over Sam Smith & One Direction’s 18!
On this final Sunday of the year, it’s safe to say that looking back over the past twelve months, both Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran have owned this year.
They both released new albums – for Sam it was his debut, while for Ed it was his second release – and both have been massively successful for the artists and not just in their native UK.
Sam’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’ has hovered around the Top 5 on the Official Albums Chart more or less since it was released back in May.
Meanwhile Ed’s ‘X’ (pronounced ‘multiply’) has been one of the biggest success stories of the year selling more than probably Sheeran and his team dreamt of.
Sam Smith has had a great 2014 and that will no doubt continue into 2015
Recently the pair performed a duet together and speaking with Digital Spy, Ed spoke about how talented Sam is – and how this reflects the current state of the music industry.
The ‘Thinking Out Loud’ performer explained: “I think it still shows that records are still being sold so the music industry isn’t dead, because Sam’s sold a lot of records and is a new artist.
He added: It basically proves that the music industry isn’t dead and good music is still being born, and that good music will always rise to the top. As long as it’s a good song it will be a hit.”
Ed also spoke about Sam’s fame and had a little suggestion for how the ‘Money on my Mind’ singer should enjoy it before thinking too much about the future.
“I mean there are plans to meet up and do stuff, but I think he should ride the wave of this album and not feel too much pressure yet to do the second one.”
Sa isn’t the only act that Ed has been gushing over either and he’s delighted with how his track 18 sounds on the new One Direction album too. Speaking to Capital FM the star revealed that he was chuffed when he first heard his pal Harry Styles and bandmates lend their vocal to his creation and explained:
“I’m really happy with the record that I wrote for them. It’s the first record I’ve actually specifically written for them…..I remember I had a meeting with them and he said we need a song. And the day after I wrote it and sent it over, and they sound great on it! It’s good.”
Ed and Sam are set to perform at the BRIT Awards in February and both are most certainly going to be nominated in some shape or form – though we think this could be Ed’s year.
Of course, across the pond, for the 57th Annual GRAMMY Awards, Sam is likely to pick up quite a few awards after being nominated in a number of categories.
