Actually, you can call it a period, but it's really not. Female dogs bleed when they are in heat. In other words, it's a signal that they're ready to mate. It can happen to spayed females. The surgery is not completely successful in 5% of all dogs.
I believe I read that somewhere too, they don't have it quite as heavy as humans I don't think but they do leak blood when in heat. Only if they aren't spayed though-a spayed female doesn't go into heat.
Yes, Females do get their periods. My German shepherd used to bleed and I would have to put a diaper (for dogs) on her now she's been spayed for few years now. Dogs go into estrus when they get it and they don't let a male mount them unless they're ready. Best way is to spay your dog unless you're planing on breeding her.

i would like to get them spayed but we haven't found a new vet yet
