We know the Doctor said he preferred to be called the Doctor when his colleague called him Theta Sigma in his early days. Also, we know River Song knows his real name according to David Tennant in the episode "The Forrest of the Dead" when he tells River that she whispered his name in his ear.
"The Pandorica Opens" episode shows the Doctor telling Amy that he followed th coordinates on the cliff face, which were left by River who knows his name, and he says next "earth, Brittain" and the year they arrived in. As I said, underneath "hello sweetie" was Theta Sigma, which I take to mean what you would write to a friend when giving directions in a message....First you would give ur message a clever title, like "hello sweetie", and next you'd all ur friend by name, like " Theta Sigma", and then you'd give them the message, like coordinates (earth, Brittain).
Of course I could be wrong, but I think his name is more complicated than the words Theta Sigma. In some translations, Theta means people or the people. Sigma means the sum of. If the question that must never be answered is really doctor Who?, as foreshadowed in the next season, then it could be that the doctors true name somehow means sum of the people, or people's summation. This would definitely make a great scenario for "the question" and why it could never be answered. Did the Doctor somehow create the human race? Like I said, I could be way off base, but I've researched the names and Greek symbols and this is one idea I've come up with.
Also, in the letter from the council of the defense when the Doctor is on trial, his name is hard to translate, but the symbol "chi" with a two is translated in one way as "air, breath" or the internal necessity for life.

![I]ve heard over 114 guesses so far. In fiction on the web one site lists this and gives the below explanation more or less as to where he got it from. I found out how it's written in Gallifreyan the lanquage of the Time Lords.(Old Gallifreyan, not unicode. It appears on several episodes, like Rivers message on the cliff, and some other places). It's written as: ∂³∑x² , which is 3 greek letters and 2 numbers, and possibly mathematical in meaning. Literallly its Delta Cubed Sigma Chi Squared, or Delta to the power of 3 Sigma Chi to the power of two. Some have said its meant to mean Dexs or Deexs or the like. Though delta is like D, sigma is like S, and Chi is like K or CH.
