Chapter 5 - Mr. Carrot’s Fault
“Bolt! They’ve left without us!” Onyx cried as she and Bolt watched the black Range Rover drive off behind the moving van. There was only one thing for it.
“There’s only one thing we can do,” Bolt said to Onyx firmly. “Follow me.” Bolt picked up Mr. Carrot again, nodded at Onyx, then took off onto the road.
“What the heck are ya doin’!? BOLT!!” Onyx had no choice but to run after him. What on Earth was he doing, running through traffic?
“We’re catching up with them, Onyx!” Bolt yelled over his shoulder as Onyx levelled with him. “We are going with them!” He was only able to talk because he had somehow managed to tuck Mr. Carrot into his collar.
The traffic was beginning to pick up as they reached a bigger road, still focused on the black Rover. Bolt pounded beside Onyx, who was starting to lose breath. She hadn’t ran like this in ages! At one moment, she tripped up, fell sideways and narrowly avoided collision with a red Skoda. Bolt darted left and right, dodging the cars and slipping between them.
“Bolt!” Onyx screamed suddenly. “Lorry!!” Bolt didn’t have a second before the lorry was right in front of him, horns blaring and shadow encasing him, he gasped, he ducked - and the lorry passed right over him.
“Onyx, get on the pavement!” Bolt barked, making a daring leap on top of a small Smart car that had just stopped next to him. The driver was startled as a flash of white crossed his windscreen and was gone again.
Onyx squeezed between two other cars and flopped down on the pavement, not taking her eyes of the Rover, which was now stuck in the congested highway. She couldn’t stop panting, and wheezed when she spoke. She jumped - Bolt had just pounded down in front of her from the car next to her.
“The cars… have stopped,” Onyx wheezed. “Now… is our… chance!”
“Do you mind a bit of car-hopping?” Bolt asked.
“What’s… car-hoppin’?”
“Jumping from car to car to eventually reach Penny, Mittens and Rhino.”
“… huh?”
“Oh, never mind, just catch your breath and follow me when you -“
Mr. Carrot was lying in the middle of the road, about one minute away from being run over by another lorry. He must’ve fallen out of Bolt’s collar!
“I’ll get him for ya, Bolt!” Onyx proudly volunteered, finally regaining her breath and standing up. “I’m actually helpin’ the Bolt! Bolt the super dog! I really am his biggest fan-“
“Onyx!”
“Oh, right, the carrot.”
Onyx stalked out into the road again. Traffic was beginning to move, and she had to dodge the moving vehicles again. Nearly three times she got hit, one time being so close Bolt took his eyes away from the Range Rover and the moving van to make sure she was okay. She saw Mr. Carrot, he was about ten seconds from being crushed!
Nine, she had to lay flat on her back and suck in as a sudden BMW passed over her.
Eight, Seven, Bolt gasped as he could not relocate the Rover with is family and closest friends inside it.
Six, Five, He then cringed as a car passing next to Onyx crunched down on her tail and she yowled in pain.
Four, Onyx levelled with the carrot, there was nothing stopping her except the pain in her tail. She crouched low to the ground, coiled up all her muscles, then let them go in a huge spring for the carrot.
Three, two, one…
SMACK.
“ONYX!!” Bolt watched in horror as Onyx disappeared underneath the lorry as a bit of metal sticking out bashed her in the head as it went over.
He didn’t care about the drivers of cars honking and beeping at him as he sped over the front of their cars to Onyx. The lorry had passed over completely now and Bolt sighed.
Miraculously, Onyx came out the other side unharmed, apart from a huge red mark on her forehead and a crushed tail. She laid there in front of a queue of angry drivers who couldn’t pass, groaning and rubbing her forehead with one paw. The other paw was still gripping Mr. Carrot tightly.
“Onyx, Onyx!!” Bolt yelled down to her from on top of a white van. “Are you okay?”
“Yah, I’m fine, sorta,” Onyx muttered, squeezing Mr. Carrot whilst looking dejectedly at her flat, forlorn tail which was once so bushy and full of life. She handed Bolt Mr. Carrot, which he took in his mouth and shook.
Together, they paced back to the pavement, where Onyx asked a vital question.
“So,” Onyx said, “where’s Penny’s car?”
Bolt’s eyes went so wide that Onyx got the message. He had lost it.
“This is all your fault,” Onyx said to Mr. Carrot’s perpetually smiling face.
Chapter 6 - Memories
Three days later, Mittens was anxiously pacing up and down a motel bedroom. Bolt and Onyx’s disappearance hadn’t just hit them, it had hit them hard. Bolt had already gone missing once, and Onyx had been in Mark’s life for almost three years. Both were extremely missed, but they couldn’t stop to go back for them. It was too late. They just had to assume they were gone forever.
“Oh, Rhino!” Mittens sobbed to the hamster one night. “Bolt, like you, was one of my best friends ever. He dragged me all the way across America, 12,000 miles we spent together, and you of course, Rhino. If you went too, I’d be completely at a loss.” Mittens picked up Rhino and hugged him to her chest.
“Bolt was the most be-awesome dog on the entire of Earth,” Rhino sniffed. “He was a survivor, a hero, he made the impossible become possible because he was fully awesome!” Rhino put a fist to his chest. “The hero of my dreams will NEVER be forgotten.”
“And Onyx was… well, I suppose she was one of my best friends for the two weeks we knew each other, too…”
“The Oklahoma girl,” Rhino said, then nodded. “I feel kinda bad about all I did to her.”
“Jealous, much?” Mittens snuffed at him. “I hope some sort of miracle happens, and they manage to find us. I mean, they can’t be far behind us, can they?”

Chapter 7 - Phoenix Airport
“We’re in Arizona?” Onyx questioned Bolt, bewildered.
“Phoenix, Arizona. The state’s capital!” Bolt said with a flourish. He had a plan. “And it’s from here that you and me are going to fly to Penny and the family, to Miami!”
“We’re gonna fly?”
Bolt and Onyx had somehow managed to hitchhike on a pick-up truck that had stopped at a petrol station that was heading to Phoenix. At a traffic light, they had jumped out at Phoenix’s biggest airport, with Bolt’s plans to fly.
“Stick with me,” Bolt said protectively, “I don’t want us to separate in the crowds.” He faced Onyx with a stare so serious it gave her a shiver. “Now, all we need to do is get in there without being seen, look at the big light signs and see which plane goes to Miami.”
Onyx blinked. “Then how do ya know which plane is which?”
“They have the numbers on the sides of them.”
“And how do we actually get on the plane when we’ve figured out which one it is?”
“The baggage area, course!” Bolt said simply. “One of us will knock something over or break something to distract the luggage people, then we use that conveyer thing to get in!”
Only half of this information went in, as Onyx was completely mesmerised by something.
“Ahh, what I would give to have that right now…”
“Onyx?”
Bolt looked where she was staring fondly and rolled his eyes. Someone had a McDonalds (16) cheeseburger in one hand and a passport in the other, handing the passport over a counter.
“Onyx, we can get something when we come off the flight, okay? Onyx?”
She was gone.
Bolt growled with annoyance. She was such a cat! He mentally reminded himself then it wasn’t her fault she actually was a cat, and set off in the shadows to find her.
Onyx, meanwhile, was pawing at the man with the cheeseburger’s leg, mewling pitifully. The man looked down - and nearly died of shock. What was a cat doing in an airport with a lightning bolt on it’s leg and very human-like ‘hair’?
“Um, you might want to know there’s a strange cat down here,” the man said to the other lady over the counter.
“Strange??” Onyx gasped, insulted. “Are ya callin’ me a freak? Ya don’t even know me, ya stupid -“
“Oh, he’s getting a bit feisty,” the man said while the woman stretched over the counter to look at the cat, who was meowing loudly and aggressively.
“Who’re ya callin’ he, mister?” Onyx growled. “Oh, that’s it, you’re goin’ down!”
With a yowling battle cry, Onyx launched herself at the man’s face, the sudden weight sending him flying. He slammed against the floor as lots of people turned to see the commotion after the man cried out in surprise. The cheeseburger flew out of his hand, and Onyx picked it up.
“That’s 99p (17) wasted purely ‘cause ya were rude to an innocent feline, man!”
“Onyx, I told you to stick with me!” Bolt was suddenly there next to her, breathing fast. “Why, Onyx? We’re going to be -“
“Animals! Gotcha!” a skeletal man of a Phoenix Animal Control officer said. A net came down over Onyx’s head, then Bolt’s. They’d been captured!
“Aha, it’s off to Quarantine for you two!” another chubby man in the same green Phoenix Animal Control uniform (18) said proudly. “Heh, better order twice as much cat food as we normally do, check out this one!”
“Speak for yourself!” Onyx yelled at that officer and Bolt laughed, even though it was a really bad situation to be laughing in. There seemed to be no escape. Their journey stopped there.
Chapter 8 - Shallow Rhino
Along the state motorway which attached ___ to _____, (19) Mittens looked through the rails of her carrier and out of the car window. Storm clouds were beginning to settle overhead, and a distant rumble of thunder boomed ahead of them. This was the one time Mittens sadly knew that noise wasn’t coming from Onyx.
Rhino lay back against the hay bedding in the cardboard box carrier, his ears twitching at the sound of the thunder. He wondered to himself where Bolt was, and whether he was okay.
“Of course Bolt is okay,” Rhino whispered to himself firmly. “He is Bolt! The courageous, loyal, daring and fearless wonder dog who occupies my dreams and thoughts every moment of the day!” Rhino sighed. “So… why am I not his biggest fan?”
“You’re so shallow, Rhino,” Mittens said to him, overhearing his self rant. “It’s obvious why Onyx is.”
Their conversation ended there as lightning flashed across the sky and rain started patting furiously on the roof of the car.
“Bolt! They’ve left without us!” Onyx cried as she and Bolt watched the black Range Rover drive off behind the moving van. There was only one thing for it.
