If Ray met evangelline as a star then, it can be both. So, altough most likely is to be just a firefly who died and became a star, I like this.. "mixed-with-other-disney-movies" stories so I want to believe that Evangelline was a firefly back in time, who died and became both the fairy and the star. So, Ray knew her only as a star.
