Definitely TLM. The Little Mermaid has obviously a bit more fame than BATB. I mean, back then it was huge, and it's coming in 3D AGAIN. So, popularity has a favorite, no doubt about it. It's known for a clear fact- that most modern girls like Ariel best, but is also in a tie with Cinderella and Belle when it comes the the Best Disney Princess on one of the awards section. Not to mention it appearing in Broadway...

Financially- TLM has got a total of decades worth of $211,343,479 and MORE TO COME in the box office. The initial release, though being nothing compared to the life-time amount, is $84 million in North America. I don't think there's more to say in finance other than the fact that more money and resources were dedicated to TLM than any other Disney animated film in decades. Quote from Wikipedia.

Critics loved it, end of story. No explanation needed. IN FACT- Rotten Tomatoes rated it as 90% positive and 5/52 reviews were considered unpositive. Is that a word? Ba-humbug. Now, the awards? Woo-hoo. TLM won awards in 9 places such as the Academy Awards and Oscars, and was nominated for a whopping 15 places. Okay, I can't think of another word than whopping- excuse me. Just so you know- Awards Total: 11, Awards that had something to do with music- (not only soundtrack, live performances also) 10. Awards that were one is the musical categories? 7. 7/10... no more shall be said. Let's see, financially, Critically, Awards, Soundtrack success, and popularity. I'm done here.

I think either The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast, because I own both of the movies and on the back they boast about how they've won the most academy awards ever.

I'm leaning towards Beauty and the Beast though :3

I think overall, the character Ariel and TLM is more popular/liked than the character Belle and BatB, at least with children. They seem to like a mermaid and the whole undersea plot better than the story of BatB, which requires them to pay attention a little more and we know the attention span of a child is rather...short. I would say that more children have seen TLM compared to BatB.

it's hard to say which, they're definitely tied for amount of success.

I agree. When I was little me and my friends didn't understand the plot of BatB, and we got confused. We skipped parts of the movie, until a lot of drama came. Attention span of a child is rather short. Short inDEED.

Same! Belle was my favorite Princess as a child, but I just liked the way she looked and stuff. I didnt understand BatB. I loved TLM though because its very fun, bright, and entertaining.
