I'm trying to think of what classes I had when I was in High School. I remember taking English Lit, Chemistry, Calculous (which I HATED), American History, American Government and Spanish. I also took creative writing, and tv production...those were all elective courses.

Thanks - so which are the core classes? Or isn't there such a thing in the US?

Yeah the core classes are Math, History, Science, and English. Sometime if people take a language class all four years then they include that as a core class like I do. So it's either the four core classes or the five if you inclued a foreign language.

I took art but that was an elective, in elementary school p.e., music, and art are mandatory things you do every week. In high school you get to pick and choose I choose art. Geography is another elementary subject but Human Geography includes geography. Sports are extra curricular they're only done after school. Politics I know in Florida it's a class that only high school seniors take and that's what governement class is.

I'm Australian, so it would be slightly different to the American system, but if it helps, my subjects in high school were:
-English
-maths
-science (we didn't choose specific disciplines until the last two years of school, which were biology, chemistry, physics and psychology)
-humanities (i.e. history, geography and a tiny bit of economics)
-LOTE (language other than English)
-physical education
-music
-art
-technology (woodwork, metalwork, textiles etc.)
-food technology
-information technology (computers)
-religious education

Here's what I remember from high school (in America):

Freshman Year: Algebra I & Geometry (Math), Art History, A basic Literature class (in which we read Romeo & Juliet, Animal Farm, Lord of the Rings Trilogy), Religion (I went to a Catholic school), Girls Health, Spanish I

Sophomore Year: Algebra II, AP European History, American Literature, Religion, Chemistry, Choir, Physical Education, Spanish II

Junior Year: Computer Science, Biology (took part in Sophomore year, finished this year), British Literature, Trigonometry, Advanced Drama, Choir, Religion, U.S. History, Spanish III

Senior Year: Statistics, U.S. Government, Economics, AP Literature, Religion, Choir, Advanced Directing

I'm probably missing some things, but I can't remember that far back these days. Haha
Did you want to know about college too?

math: algebra through pre-calc, unless you choose to take calc I<33 (very few high schools offer calc II, usually the more affluent schools)

english: all 4 years of high school... we don't really learn anything in those classes... probably read a shakespeare or so... at least that's all my school did.

history: US history I and II, some sort of cultures course, no requirement for the last grade

sciences: biology (or earth sciences then biology if you didn't test well the year before), chemistry, physics (no requirement for the last grade)

others: psychology, sociology, art, band, orchestra, choir, language (you need 2 years to graduate high school- the choices are usually spanish, french, german, and probably soon chinese), woodshop, home-economics, macro/micro economics, physical fitness (4 years required), uhmmm... i can't remember what else we had... AP courses (these are college-credit courses- if you test well on the AP test, you don't have to take that course in college/university), usually in something you've already taken (calculus, psychology, physics, chemistry, biology, etc)

Hmm... trying to think... If you go to a specialty school, you can take additional courses in something most schools would not. I was part of the music academy which was attached to the local high school, so I got took music theory, violin private instruction, a couple orchestra classes, quartet... others include the dance academy, communications academy (media), cooking, military classes... I can't think of anything else..

Ps. I'm American lol

Thank you - that was thorough. You can learn German? That's great.

No problem! And yeah, you can. I didn't get to take it, but I heard that the German teacher taught the students how to say silly things in German, which was really funny lol
