Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Devil May Cry's Future Isn't Tied to How Well Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition Sells
We\'ll begin emailing you updates about %gameName%.
Hideaki Itsuno is a seasoned veteran of the Devil May Cry series. Having served as director for Devil May Cry 2, 3, and 4, the developer has been with Dante, the son of Sparda, for a long time. With Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition out now, the creator has finally returned to the series once more.
I got the chance to speak to Itsuno during E3 last week. The following discussion contains a variety of topics, including the challenges of adding new characters into Devil May Cry 4, his thoughts on DMC: Devil May Cry, and some of Itsuno\'s hopes for the series moving forward. But what was most intriguing out of all of this in our conversation was how the sales of Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition will not determine the future of the series. If anything, the game\'s existence is more of a message to fans that the main series is far from over.
What were some of the challenges introducing three new characters into Devil May Cry: Special Edition?
Itsuno: We always planned to have Virgil added to the game because he was in the special edition of Devil May Cry 3. That was there right from the start, but we were originally planning on having Lady and Trish be alternate re-skins of Dante, Nero, and Vergil. Then we looked at it and thought, "Maybe people don\'t want that." Even though we were already part way through the project, we already accounted time for making costume diversions of Lady and Trish, so we decided to go the the extra mile and add them in as full-fledged characters with their own unique move-sets. Though, the toughest part of adding them was having less time than we anticipated we would have to do more work, but we got there in the end.
Did Lady and Trish necessitate any sort of tweaks or changes to the original gameplay in terms of level design or balance to be able to put them in?
Rather than changing the game\'s level design, we put our effort towards designing Lady and Trish to be gameplay experiences that are different from Dante, Nero, and Virgil. The only thing we changed was some of the bosses in order to accommodate Lady and Trish\'s different play styles so they don\'t get caught in an attack exploit due to the new gameplay that wasn\'t anticipated during original development.
However, these changes are per character. So if you\'re playing as Dante, you\'ll get the same boss fight experience you had in the original game. But if you play Lady, for example, that\'s when the bosses become Lady compatible bosses so to speak.
Now that Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition is complete, do you have a favorite character that stands out for you of the five that are in the game?
I would probably say Lady. It\'s a real discovery I made myself when we created her. To put a long range character into DMC and to take on the challenge of making that work was clearly something very different from what we\'ve done before. We worked really hard on her and I\'m really pleased with the way she came out. The fact that something that is something totally new to existing players is really fun.
Is Lady a character that you think that is strong enough to support her own game, maybe, in some stage?
Yeah, as a matter of fact we considered that after making Devil May Cry 3. We thought we could have a Lady spin-off. It never happened, but she\'s definitely cool enough and strong enough character.
Something I read, and I wanted to confirm with you, is there a survey within the game for fans, which will help determine the future of the franchise?
I think it\'s a bit of a misunderstanding. At the time of Devil May Cry 4, I spoke to an interviewer in Japan and I had given a message to the fans at the end of the interview saying "Let us know what you want to see in the future of DMC." I spoke to the same guy this time around for the special edition and I kind of just made an off-the-cuff comment along the lines of, "We\'re always listening to your feedback, please buy the special edition." So I think the fans with internet have taken that there is a literal survey somewhere with check boxes that will feed into a future game, but it was just a general comment on my part saying that Capcom values fan feedback.
Because that headline read as the future of the franchise is dependent on this, and that\'s not the case, is that correct?
No, I have never said anything along the lines of holding anything in the future hostage to sales of this title.
The Devil May Cry series has a very dedicated fan base who are still playing Devil May Cry 4 to this day. What do you want to say to them in regards to what they can look forward to with the Devil May Cry series?
After Devil May Cry 4 came out and then Ninja Theory\'s DMC: Devil May Cry followed it, some fans were disappointed and felt the main series had ended. But I\'m glad that the message is out there with Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition that the main series is not over, and that DMC: Devil May Cry did not kill it. But that isn\'t to say that the latter was just a one shot, that game also got it\'s own next-gen re-release earlier this year.
Speaking of Ninja Theory and DMC: Devil May Cry, at the time you had said that part of the reason you went with them was that you wanted a different sensibility around the franchise. What were your overall thoughts on the final product and the game?
I think I\'m happy with the performance of the game. If it had been a world changing hit, it might have changed the course of the series by becoming the new DMC. But at the same time, if it was a lot less successful than it was, it might have just been a flash in the pan failure that never got followed through with the definitive edition this year. In a way, I\'m actually really pleased of where we were able to hit between those two separate extremes.
So you see those, I guess, those two series games as fairly separate?
Yeah, they are a little bit apart in that sense that if you didn\'t look at it that way you couldn\'t release the DMC 4: Special Edition, for example.
Do you see yourself sort of taking that on internally again, or working with partners to develop?
I honestly don\'t know. I don\'t really know, to be honest, at this stage.
You mentioned earlier before that you guys are always listening to fan feedback. How much does that influence your decisions about that game? The fan community is very vocal, but you still have to serve a broad audience. What do you pick up from fans and what do you try and stick to your vision about?
I like to listen to all the fan feedback that I can, but listening to it doesn\'t mean listening to it and doing everything that the fans request, because that would end up with a not very good game. That\'s not to say that the fan feedback isn\'t good, but if you took it all on board and put it all together then you would get a mess in the game. You have to make these decisions about what to include and what not to include. The high level play that we see from the really hardcore fans is something that we want to keep.
The high level play that we see from the really hardcore fans is something that we want to keep.
At the same time, I want to expand the base of that structure so that you have this very high peak that the fans can reach, but that you still have an accessible of enough base so that people who aren\'t as hardcore can still get in there and enjoy the gameplay. With that in mind, I like to listen to the fan feedback but not necessarily do exactly what they\'ve asked. Instead I think "Well that\'s what they like and this is why they want that, but how can I even go above and beyond that with my own idea that will hopefully satisfy those fan desires?"
What are the most common things that fans keep asking you about apart from, "Where\'s my Devil May Cry?"
People ask me a lot if we can have more development of Sparda as a character, and also I get asked a lot if there\'s any possibility of co-op coming to the series, which is something we\'ve flirted with in the past. In Devil May Cry 3, and its special edition, there\'s certain parts of the game where Dante would have a doppelganger on screen. You can actually plug in a second controller and press start, and a second player can take control of the doppelganger. It\'s kind of hidden co-op feature that maybe not many people know about. That also works for a boss battle in that game where Dante and Virgil team up against a boss. So it\'s definitely something we\'ve had in our minds for a long time that I\'d certainly be interested in exploring.
Do you think that the style of gameplay that you want is conducive to co-op?
Well, we wouldn\'t go as far to say that, because obviously if it was completely 100% suited to the gameplay we have, we would have put it in by now. Part of the reason co-op has appeared as a secret feature in bits and pieces is because there were problems with simply implementing co-op into Devil May Cry as it is.

Holy shit I did not know Devil May Cry 3 had co-op. And what do you know it just so happens I have recently re-obtained a PS2 looks like I know what game I\'m getting now.
I would love to see what became of Dante after DMC 2 (current story timeline), but first the most important questions are, how much of the locked content and day 1 dlc do we have to pay for?
Will the case and the disc come together, or do we have to pre-order to get both?
How many re-re-re-re RE releases should i wait for to get the actual final product?
YOUR want isn\'t tied into sales for a new Devil May Cry game, however CAPCOM\'s want is certainly tied into the sales.
I haven\'t forgotten their statement that any series that doesn\'t sell 2 million+ is dead and will not get anymore games. Still ticks me off.
And hopefully DMC dies. It didn\'t sell well in the first place but they are really pushing to try to make it do so. Which it continued to not with the definitive edition. Hopefully that says "we don\'t like it" to them and it never continues.
I\'d like a DMC with Vergil as the main and Dante as the secret.
I like that they\'re keeping DMC and DmC seperate. I loved the old series and I loved the new take on it as well. Two Devil May Cry franchises sounds awesome to me. MORE DMC PLEASE.
I really hope Capcom is working on DMC 5, and I hope Ninja Theory goes back for DmC 2 after they finish hellblade. I want to see some real next gen Devil May Cry games.
@merimack: Best post so far, fully agree.
@virtuasega: Ninja Theory going back to DmC2, I doubt it would ever happen. Capcom continuing DMC5, yes, I think it\'s the only option possible, but will it ever happen? How many years must we wait? Damn... I wish I knew. I am waiting to continue where DMC4 left off since 2008, the wait is far too long
If Capcom doesn\'t use that sexy pant rhei engine to return to their former glory I\'m going to be bummed. They have become so out of touch latley, but they don\'t create their games in house anymore. What do they expect? IF RE7 and DMC5 aren\'t made with panta Rhei I\'m going to chalk it up to they just lost it and are going to just sink with the ship. Not to mention if Deep down going completely dark being a little scary considering that was said that it was gong to be a JP launch title. I would also love to see them make a new beat em up style that asscreed, Batman, and FFXV is doing. Remember me doesn\'t count, that game was pretty terrible.
@lunodoom: I personally wish Capcom would take that Panta Rhei engine and make Dragon\'s Dogma 2 (not that lousy DD online pay to win nonesense) and also make a Devil May Cry 5. And I hope they will make it sooner than later... its been far too long.
The DmC DE lacks of content while DMC4 SE looks little outdated, however the style is identical to Onimusha and the old school resident evil games. IMO DmC is a DMC4 copy they borrowed plenty of things this make the game less original. I really hope to see DMC5.
Capcom values fan feedback? Haha! If that were true, we\'d be seeing more Mega Man games and a DMC5.
Instead, you cancel MM, what fans wanted, and proceed with that abomination of a reboot, that fans were already saying they didn\'t want.
@Lord_Dagger: I\'m a fan and I welcomed the reboot. I was getting a little tired of the franchise after DMC 2, 3 and 4. They\'d just been adding layers to the combat system, making it somewhat overwhelming to me, while the rest of the game was more or less the same. I liked all of the DMC games, but DmC: Devil May Cry was a breath of fresh air to me, and a darn fun game. People got way too hung up on the change in looks for Dante imo, and it tarnished the image of the game. So you\'re oversimplifying things here - not everyone wanted a DMC5 and not everyone hated the reboot. In fact, I\'m hoping more for a second game in the rebooted series, than a fifth in the main franchise.
Agree on the Mega Man part though. Capcom really dropped the ball there, but that\'s being sorted with Mighty No. 9.
@Geertvdheide: I didn\'t ask for or wanted a gritty edgy westetnized reboot of one of my favorite franchises. I gave the reboot a chance and all it did was take the series back 5 years back with it\'s stripped down combat. DMC is a stylish character action game, story was nevet it\'s selling point. Kinda like Bayonetta and MGR. Dante became Donte and Vergil became Vergin. The design had nothing to do with my dislike for the reboot like 99% of Donte\'s fanboys love to believe.
No style switching, no taunts, awful oversaturated visuals, terrible dialogue, and uninteresting/boring characters. If it was a game under a different title, I would craft a different opinion. But because it has "Devil May Cry" slapped on, it doesn\'t live up to it. The Definitive Edition fixed most issues and made it a bit decent but the lack of style switching or taunts still bug the hell outta me.
It\'s a decent hack and slash game but not a good Devil May Cry game.
@Lord_Dagger: I have no issue with your opinion of the reboot - I can definitely see why you like the style of the earlier games more and that\'s fine. I also didn\'t say that you hated the reboot because Dante looks different - only that the new look caused, in the general gaming community, way more controversy than was warrented. My only issue was with your generalisation that nobody liked or wanted the reboot. Critics were generally positive about it and so were many players, including me.
Capcom had a tough choice to make: Keep the die-hard fans happy with another incrementally improved installment, or try to gain a larger, new audience by changing the style and somewhat lowering the complexity of the combat system. You would have applauded the first option - I preferred the second. Capcom chose a reboot, but is now catering to the oldschool fans again with this Special Edition. So in the end, both the traditional DMC fans and those who wanted something new got something at least.
Now we\'ll have to wait and see what the next game will be. They could make it old style or new, or add more depth to the new style to make it play more like the earlier titles - a combo of sorts.
@Geertvdheide: And, as you saw, DmC didn\'t do so well. Especially after the awful PR practice of Capcom and Ninja Theory. Well, believe it or not, there are still a lot of people who dislike this reboot-- me included. Critics were praising the reboot and, at the same time, antagonizing the fanbase if you remember. They felt the need to defend it just to suck up to Ninja Theory and the fan backlash. A reboot would\'ve been fine it were done by Itsuno and his team and not by a mediocre studio, who\'s games haven\'t done so well, for the sake of grabbing casuals.
As for the next DMC, Ninja Theory already confirmed that they are not working on anything DMC related after the Definitive Edition. A Gaf insider, however, confirmed that a new DMC game is under development with Capcom.
As a matter of fact, DMC HD Collection outsold the DmC reboot game. If that reboot had a different name, people wouldn\'t be so pissed.
Good. Cuz a digital-only rehash isn\'t going to inspire much enthusiasm..
I have played all of them, and for me I loved the new DmC, I thought the story was ok, but the gameplay was really fun, but pretty easy in my opinion. . . I think they can include things that they did with that game and implement it into the next Devil May Cry game.
DMC4\'s re-release made me want to go back to DmC. Funny, eh?
It would have been nice if Capcom had extended this kind of courtesy to Darkstalkers.
Sadly by their own words, that series is dead. :
I hope it doesn\'t because they kind of rigged it being a Download only title outside of Japan. For consoles being download only cuts out all those who buy physical copies of games and to see only DmC: Devil May Cry; Definitive Edition and not Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition on the same shelf space is a big way to swing the numbers in favour of one instead of the other.
@karloss01: yep. Though there is an English language Asian edition out there on bluray for both PS4 and Xbox One.
Love naivety of people thinking both reboot and DMC would exist. Capcom is greedy bunch and they will kill one of them if they make next game. They won\'t keep them both afloat alone from money perspective. So whatever comes next, essentially puts dot in existence of another one (Just hope it would be DmC that cease to exist. )
I just want a DMC sequel, get Ninja Theory on it!!!!
@WHURule: Yes please, LOVED everything about the NT DMC.
Im glad Lady is his favorite character. I wanna see more of her. She also happens to be one of the hottest girls in gaming!
lol im sorry but without hideki kamiya, the devil maycry wont be able to fill the soul with liiiiight
I assume the guy being interviewed was speaking Japanese, in which case, get it together, interpreters.

@naryanrobinson: I\'m used to it from gamespot. It seems they throw these articles up in 10 minutes and call it good. No need for proofreading lol
Devil may cry series will always be one of finest gem the gaming universe can have. For me in the main series Devil may cry 3 was and always remain best. After playing DMC4 i was kind of not satisfied. I really felt it needed a change in the wind. Then came DmC: Devil May Cry. Many of my friends said it was a bad game but that didn\'t stop me from playing it. I thoroughly enjoyed it every moment almost everything was well balanced. But it was not accepted by fans well which pretty much killed it.
Then again after reading this and hearing the words from Mr. Itsuno. I was relieved atleast now there is hope for both the series. If they continue with main series, i would like to see Sparda as the protagonist for a change and if they go with DmC:2 then continue after Vergil\'s Downfall.
@LalchandTudu: Dream on. There won\'t be both DMC and DmC. Capcom don\'t have money for it, and Itsuno\'s word means pretty much nothing.
Ninja Theory\'s DMC: Devil May Cry Dante skin is ass no ty.
Yeah, but the sales of the remaster will definitely be taken into consideration. Glad to see they brought back rock star Dante, instead of that anemic looking stand in. Also, and off point, why is there a rainbow on Gamespot? Video game reviews don\'t really have orientations.
If they can keep the two games as their own separate universes; that would be nice. I am only interested in the Japanese-styled DMC. It would be quite a bit easier though if they found a better title to separate the two versions. Would be pretty interested in a Sparda-centric game; it seams like something that they can really let loose with, with him being a full-fledged demon and all - could come up with some really interesting gameplay I\'d guess with some version of devil triggers/transformations/arms ect. I\'d also like some more concerning Nero - that ending just leaves a lot to be desired.
He makes a good point about listening/building upon fan feedback; like his approach to it. With that comment about the other one, it looks like the originals are, and staying, the main game; hopefully that always comes first and they make it more of a point to point that out going forward. Will be interesting to see how things move going forward. I knew about the secrete co-op, though I though it was only for the one boss fight where Vergil is with you (why I am blanking on the name....). I\'d probably suck with Lady - I can\'t play long-range; horrible with that type of gameplay.
Internet comments and reviews have stopped me from buying this remaster. I have been just waiting for DmC to drop from $40 to $25ish. Devel May Cry looks like a great game and wonderful concept but I have only played DMC3 when I was a child and it was too difficult at the time. Can\'t wait to play I guess the first remaster because I hate re-tracing already visited areas unless it is done with skill and talent like Zelda or a remixed level on a platformer. Filler is a killer.
A Devil May Cry based on Sparda could be cool. I\'d like to know exactly wtf is going on with Nero though. Some more story on background on him would be nice
@Chaos_Dante_456 defintaely, I liked him a lot especially the voice actor, and if they make a sequel then they can focus on him a bit more and have vergil in there as well!
Devil May Cry 4 was my favorite of ALLLLLLLL the Crying Devil\'s. Ma favorite.
@deusvex: Finally someone else! I thought I was alone in this world on this!
@Chaos_Dante_456: rejoice! for once there was one there are now two!!
Love Itsuno sans studios work, and great Q.A \'s.
I agree on coop, isn\'t really a focus but if done like the doppelganger but maybe an online variation? Could be fun.
It\'s a relief DMC4.2 doesn\'t reflect Dantes future, as honestly its his teams overall worst game since DMC2.
Maybe he\'ll be working on a DMC5 after DDO.
Both are great. Would love to see a DMC5 and a DmC2.
@czlapaj2: id really prefer a new onimusha game first... i mean they just \'definitive edition\' two devil games.
@leviathanwing: That would be great! Preferably one starring Samonusuke I didn\'t really care for Dawn of Dreams\' protagonist...the game-play wasn\'t very appealing either
@leviathanwing: I asked this for many times. :( Why they are always acting like Onimusha series is weak? Remaster them! :(
@leviathanwing: Well that would be great! Maybe they will finally make a new one
It\'s Capcom, so don\'t believe a single word.
@Thanatos2k: Itsunos team in Capcom tends to deliver all its best games. If one studio in Capcom is worth attention? It\'s Hideaki Itsuno sans!
@RSM-HQ: Yep, this guy directed Dragon\'s Dogma. I can\'t wait for news on a true sequel to it!
@BradBurns: Yeah, and look what happened to Dragon\'s Dogma. Turned into a shitty F2P MMO.
@RSM-HQ i believe most of those people are at platinum games now with hideki kamiya
@xwulfd: As much as I like Platinum games that sounds wrong, I\'m pretty sure Clover studios became Platinum.
Finally good news that let u feel there might probably be a continuity of development of DMC/ Devil may cry soon in further future. I don\'t care whom would be the representative. More Importantly, Something may be coming. & DMC titles would NOT be dead after all.
Whilst I personally would like to see DmC get another game of that kind once more, I\'m good with that idea.
I hate to sound like I\'m giving them too much credit, but...Capcom aren\'t doing as bad as they used to, a few years ago. They\'ll probably do something to make me eat my own words in a few months time, but so far, they don\'t seem to be doing too bad.
I would hope not, cause that shat aint gone sell, we dont want no remasters, we want DMC2.
Yeah. Because God forbid that consumer demand dictates such things.
@rawkstar007: well its a pretty bad upgrade, if you can even call it that, to a pretty mediocre title so lets hope that the sales or lack thereof of such a game not prevent a new entry being made. you do realize your statement is a de facto defense of why capcom doesnt make dragons dogma or dont you get that?
As long as the rebooted universe sticks around I\'m happy.
I\'ve always loved Devil May Cry, but none of that love was ever for the non-existent story that never made any sense. The reboot fixed that problem completely. I chalk that up to western culture just being more engrained in story-telling.
I still love the old series, I bought 4 on Tuesday and it\'s a blast. However it is a testament to how much better the story was in the reboot. I have been laughing at how bad it is in 4. lol
The story was insanely easy to understand. You would have to be oblivious/skipping everything to not get it.
@skyhighgam3r: really hope they can still make DmC 2 while still release DMC 5 (I really don\'t care).
@skyhighgam3r: Funny thing is I like the bad story telling. It\'s so tongue in cheek especially around Dante\'s half. I like the over the top cockiness and silly dialogue. But I aso really liked the story and character depth of DmC. I hope there\'s room for both universes to exist.
Thats good that Devil May Cry and DMC are two different entities going forward. i like both, (while i greatly favor Devil May Cry main series) and would love for their cannon to be completelly separate.
Dude, seriously the way Team Ninja did Co-Op in the Ninja Gaiden series was great and Platinum followed suit it made it fun, too with Bayonetta 2. It can be done, and done pretty well in fact.
I guarantee if you tell fans you can play as Dante and their friend can team up as Virgil you\'ll have a hit on your hands. Maybe not make the main game Co-Op focused, or even accessible, but have a challenge mode that is co-op focused like Ninja Gaiden 2/3 and Bayonetta 2 did. Like make Bloody Palace co-op accessible. Bonus Kudos if you can make 4 players work and we can pick series heroes like Nero, Trish, Lucia, and Trish.
Other than that, I really did enjoy DmC: Devil May Cry. After how awesome DMC3 was DMC4 left me really dissapointed from the drop in combat variety and the back tracking the whole game as Dante thing. I went into DmC: Devil May Cry with low expectations, especially after waiting til it was free on PSN because other DMC fans told me it was bad. Turns out it is one of my favorite action combat games now. As much as I enjoyed it I wouldn\'t want it to take over as the main series. Edgy Punk Dante is cool in all but I am quite fond of Fratboy Party Dante and wouldn\'t want him permanently replaced.
I thought DMC killed the series off already so the future is petty much written out.
@RSM-HQ: hes obviously talking about the ol\' dmc killed devil may cry... emo hero... hate, hate, hate... dante a pansie... etc, etc, etc... right?
@leviathanwing: And yet if he read, both are handled as entirely different franchises.
I want DMC5 GODDAMNIT!!! I\'m fvckin tired of remakes. I\'ve already beaten DMC4 5 or 6 times (wich with the backtraking corresponds at 10 or 12 times). I wont be buying the remake, sorry. Vergil is tempting but I\'m not in the mood of playing the game again.
@Vatusus: when the backtracking happened i stopped playing... it was like why am i doing this again? i just did this!?!
Very good article, exactly what I am looking for. Regardless if GS bad review, the release of DMC SE has been great from what I read in Steam user reviews and heard. I really think the review was pretty lame and shallow. The users and fans love this game and that\'s what matters
I am still waiting for the next DMC, Devil May Cry 5 to finally arrive. Still waiting to continue from where Nero left me in 2008. It was my favorite game of that year, and one of my all time classics.
How long must we wait for DMC5? How many more years :/
Sometimes language can be a difficult concept for some to grasp. Even so, I still don\'t believe him, since I do recall Capcom saying that a series need to have to sell at least 2m to warrant a sequel. And seeing as this game launched alongside the more hyped Batman game, I can only imagine sales aren\'t good.
@tarp_master: Itsuno san is a studio director not Capcoms PR, he does not determine how much a game needs to sell to go forward. Him and his team are simply the development team. My guess is his team already had the green light lit for Devil May Cry 5, & that\'s why he\'s confident in his answer.
@tarp_master: He didn\'t say what capcom did or didn\'t say, just what he said.
I\'m sorry, but I find this difficult to believe. This is Capcom, after all. The same people who said a game needs to get at least 2 million sales to get a sequel.
This dude only did one game I like then? And he\'s in charge? At least he knows that a high difficulty it\'s and integral part of DMC identity.
While I found DmC fun, glad to know there will be more of the original DMC.
