There are advantages and disadvantages that each gender must deal with. Women have to deal with being paid less than their male counterparts in the same field. Men have to be more worried about their interactions with children. Both of these are due to prejudices we've built up and continue to linger in our society.
Besides every gender has its pros and cons. And about Cinder's; "Men have to be more worried about their interactions with children"
So true! Btw not just children, teenagers and young adults as well! (happens at my school a lot that a teacher is accused of something -.-)
^^ Yup, I've noticed this as a female teacher. Even in my teaching program, they advised, "Be aware of the physical contact you have with children and, though I know it's a double standard, men have to be especially careful about how they interact with children."
But Chaann, you admit, as I did, that being either gender has its challenges and benefits. The question is asking, "Are there... advantages to being [one sex over the other]?" By admitting that there are pros and cons, you admit that there are pros, or advantages, which is what the question is asking. So why say no?
Advantages to being male (apparently):
-You can write your name in the snow with a special wet pen. :)
Advantages to being female:
- Boobs. - typically longer hair. - Wearing what we want without looking strange. - Not afraid to cry...
The list goes on.
But i wish i could write my name in the snow like boys do. Just saying. ^-^
@Cinders yeah well she said; "being male over female or being female over male" so technically she means which one is better. At least, that's how I read it...
But english isn't my first language so confusing stated sentences like this one... well... they confuse me XD
You didn't read that wrong. It's one of the many sentences in English that can be read correctly both the way you interpreted it and the way I interpreted it. I only just noticed that myself.
And because I just noticed that, everyone gets their grammar lesson for the day.
"Are there any advantages to being male over female or being female over male?"
Valid interpretations: "Are there advantages to one OR the other, OR both"
"Are there advantages to one OR the other, ONLY."
This is because of that pesky word "or." As a conjunction, "or" actually has many functions in sentences, especially in linking clauses. Commas - or perhaps an "either" - might help clarify this statement. But as it stands, "or" can act either as an link, or an link.
I interpreted it as being an inclusive or, whereas you interpreted it as being an exclusive or. Without further clarification, both interpretations are accurate.
