No, I personally think that's crossed a line. I don't have an issue with parents who spank their kids, it's not how I was raised or how I would do things, but if people are being responsible with it that's a parent's prerogative I think. The thing is, spanking is meant to be a punishment, a way to teach a child they have done wrong and that there are consequences for misbehaving. A slap to the face seems like a loss of control on the parent's side, which is the opposite of the point of spanking. A spank is a punishment, a slap to the face is a parent snapping. Not only is that going too far, it also harms their authority, because if they give the appearance of the punishment being an emotional reaction not a logical one it allows the child to think of the punishment as unreasonable which means they will miss it's point and resent it rather than learning from it.

Do you believe slapping the person sitting next to you in the face is okay? Same goed for children. You just don't hit people in the face just because they made you angry or something, especially for kids, parents are supposed to teach them that violence doesn't solve everything not that it's okay to hit people.

It's absolutely not okay. New studies have shown that you shouldn't even spank your kids. There are correlations between physical punishment and an increase in childhood anxiety, depression as well as behavioral problems.

Like I said on the other pick, I don't think spanking or slapping is an effective form of discipline. And like Mermaid-Tail said, slapping someone in the face is definitely crossing the line. That's another reason I don't agree with spanking- it can so easily escalate into other forms of physical abuse.

Slapping anyone across the face is not only painful, but insulting. It's seen as a humiliating form of violence, one that abusive husbands often use against their wives.

In other words, not cool.

Violence is never the answer. Slapping a child (or anyone else) is crossing a line. When you slap your kid, you're not disciplining him/her. You're loosing control. Slapping isn't something you think about before you take action. Is that what children should be learning? To act on your anger without considering the consequences first? I don't think so.

When do you draw the line if it is 'okay'? Either it is fine all of the time or none of the time. I personally think none of the time. I agree with Cinders, it's humiliating.

To laureng114:

On one side of the line is responsible discipling and on the other is abuse (physical or emotional). I agree with you that violence is never fine. I meant that non-violent discipling of your children is okay.

smacking kids across the face is low, and it crosses a line. so no, never. physical abuse is what that is.

Never. Parents should be more mature and find a more rational way to disipline their children.

Wow.....my mother used to slap me in the face whenever I did anything wrong (use up a bottle of soap, yelling, becoming hyperactive, disrespect, whatever I can remember I was hit for). And now I'm seeing numerous people saying slapping is wrong.

Huh..

I don't really think it's the right thing to do...I mean, the results of my mother slapping me all of the time as a child are not pretty. Believe that. :)

But at the same time, is it really that wrong? I'm curious now...

I don't think its WRONG but I was slapped all the time when I was a kid. I didn't really learn anything from it, except slap other people across the face. I guess the lesson here is "What goes around, comes around."
But.....is it really that wrong, like sapherequeen said?

Absolutely not! I don't think that's going to help anything even if the child did something wrong,I think making any contact with a child could make the situation much worse and can escalate things,I think there are better and more effect solutions than making psyical contact with a child.

No way!!! That completely crosses the line!!! Doesn't matter what they did, its just totally wrong for me!!! Besides, the child will learn violence and use it themselves to other people!
