Normality is what you are accustumed to.
For example, i could be accustumed to girls wearing dresses, for me to see another girl NOT wearing a dress that to me would seem "not normal"

No because then the question of who gets to draw the line that divides what is "normal" and what isn't.

It also brings up the point that if something isn't "normal" than we need to smash it and re-configure it to become "normal" and therefore "better". Who gets to say what needs to be fixed, who should ever be able to define that?

Maybe normality is relative to a person, but normality shouldn't be given a definition, because then where do we stop, who else do we discriminate against? Remember once that being black wasn't considered "normal".

People were accustumed to being told that black wasnt normal...therefore i still stick to my theory.

Normal is a relative term. People take it to mean whatever they personally see it as, based on how they were raised, their personal experiences and beliefs, etc. You cannot define normal, since so many people consider it to be so many different things. As for me, I don't believe there is such a thing as normal. Since everyone is different in so many different ways, how can there be one constant "Normality"?

I have no problem with defining 'normality'. But in doing so you automatically make everything that does not fall in that category not normal. That line will not lead to anything good.

And I disagree with your definition Emma01.
I am accustumed to visiting the hospital a lot, that does not make it normal.
Some people are accustumed to hunger, does that make it normal?

I would assume that it would make it normal. in a lot of countries hunger is normal, a sucky normal but normal. I have become accustom to routine doctor visits and i don't find anything abnormal about it.

'Normal' is only a word. It doesn't really exist.

I'm sorry, I was not completely clear about the hopital point.

For me, it is normal. As normal as going shopping (I often combine the two too :P)

But to others it is not. Thus it is looked upon as not normal.

Just as western country's don't find hunger normal.

That's was what I meant: what you are accustumed to might be normal to you, but it might not be to others. So maybe you can define your own normality, but not the general normality.

Stereotypically, according to your culture/society. Individually, I would have to disagree.

I believe that the words "Normal", "Normalcy", and "Normality", are three of those rare words with no definition whatsoever.

If you think about it, the term normality doesn't actually exist. All human beings are different, there's no actual examble for "normal".

Normal is the average, the most common result for any given variable.

Normal is relative, and there far too many different people (and countries) in this world for there to be any kind of "norm."

Normal is a matter of...
blackpanther666 picked Normal is a matter of perspective:
Normal is a matter of perspective. Anyway, who gets to decide what is normal and what is not? It may be a matter of perspective, but even then, this still falls a bit far from what I would expect... Normal is indeed an average, for a common result of a variable, but that is more scientific and doesn't really describe living, breathing beings, like humans.

For me, it depends. In SOME senses, we can define what's normal, but I'm thinking in the physiologic sense. It's normal to have certain organs in our bodies, the capacity to breathe, a brain that's at least partially functional, all that good stuff. Normality as a whole is a strange concept, especially when you're talking about behaviors, but in certain cases normality equates with necessity.

Is it even normal to be normal? Since no one is truly normal isn't it abnormal to be normal, thus making you normal for not being normal. Normal is a paradox!
