It is normal for the ratings of a show to drop constantly after a few years (please, show-runners, let the story end soon). But the extend will depend on how many story holes and bended basic story rules there will continue to be (and they also lost much viewer interest by keeping to pretend that SE were not restlessly over romantically, what they have obviously already been for a long time). And the biggest influence will have how soon Delena will be reunited, and that means when Damon and Bonnie will come back as well as when DE will continue with their relationship.
The writers do a great job with the relationships and the characters, but the storylines have never been that good. The fans don’t seem to be much interested in the new lives of people or about what happens to dead supernaturals without the other side and such things, and it is even said that the next phase won’t be much about romantic relationships. That the audience has to get used again to a new situation after a time jump doesn’t help, but calling S6 the final or at least pre-final season would attract old and new viewers.
And there definitely should also be more said about the relationships and characters, especially the by far most beloved Delena love story and Damon’s character development (both combined the heart and soul of the story), because there are still so many fears and so much pessimism despite the clear direction of the story.

It is also not helpful that we don’t hear much about Damon. I get that the show-runners want to keep the suspense by giving away nothing about where Damon and Bonnie landed. But they should say something about Damon’s view, thoughts, feelings and so on, there should be some information about his emotional and other inner situation, because that is what the audience is mostly interested in.

That reminds me of 5x12, when the writers didn't say a word about Elena's whereabouts. It would be nice if they have a little hint.

Yes. Definitely yes. Not because they killed off Damon and Bonnie (they're obviously going to come back, one way or another, let's not kid ourselves here), but because the quality has been slipping. I like this show and all but you've got to admit from season 3 onwards, it wasn't very good. Season 4 at least had the whole 'Elena's transition' theme to hold it together. This season jumped from Silas, Qetsiyah and the doppelganger prophecy to Katherine and the Travelers to the Augustine ordeal to the Travelers planning to destroy magic or whatever. There was no thread linking them, except for the Travelers but that wasn't obvious enough. So this season felt disconnected to me. I'm not sure the show can survive past season 6, so here's hoping they'll wrap things up soon before no one is interested anymore or worse, it gets canceled.

Seriously agree, they run through way too many plots& storylines, pick one and stick with it!

I certainly think so. I already don't really plan on watching it. I'm really fucking pissed they killed Damon off. It was just stupid IMO.

Also, must they ruin Stefan&Caroline's incredible friendship by pushing them together? Come on. Can no male& female safely be just friends anymore?

I agree SO much about Stefan and Caroline. The main reason why I liked them so much was their pure platonic friendship. But no, let's just have everyone in the Fang Gang take turns dating each other.

Exactly! It's like they're trying to turn the show into Gossip Girl or something. JFC.

It could but I hope not. Its sure that Damon and Bonnie will be back and I don't know about anyone else but I'm curious to know where Damon and Bonnie went and how the gang is planning to bring them back :)

It depends on which direction they take the show in, the more interesting it is then the rating will possibly sky-rocket. But if not then we're facing the possibility of the show getting canceled. Either way, I'm watching till the very end.

I'm not sure, but either way, it doesn't really matter. TVD is one of the most popular show on the network, so even if the ratings are terrible, they won't cancel the show next season, and there will be at least a short final season.
