What race is Esmeralda?

Don't say gypsy because gypsy is not a race.

In the 1923 film, she looks white

In the movie, she is too dark to be European. It's hard to tell.

In the book, she's Egyptian. (It might be mentioned in the movie). She was born in Egypt but was raised in Paris by Gypsies who took her away from her mother.
