Dean sat beside Cas in the intensive care. Cas had been in surgery the entire morning and part of the afternoon. He was fast asleep now, but the doctor had assured it was only a matter of time before he’d wake up.
Dean wondered if Cas had been aware of what he was doing. He’d make sure to ask when Cas woke up. Which was a couple of minutes after.
“Hi, there” Dean mumbled softly when Cas opened his eyes. “You scared the hell out of me, man”
Cas tried to sit upright, decided it hurt too much and lay back down. “I’ve talked to the doctor and…he said they might have to take you some place where you can’t hurt yourself”
Cas frowned. Was Dean saying what he thought he was saying?
“I don’t like it either” Dean shook his head sadly. “But I think it’s the best way to keep you safe. They even might get you to talk again”
They were going to put him away. In any other circumstances Cas would’ve tried to escape his unfortunate fate, but with Meg gone, he no longer seemed to have a purpose to fight for.
“Sam and I will visit you every day” Dean promised. What about all the evil things you’re supposed to hunt down?, Cas thought. “The hunt can wait” Dean continued, as if he’d read Cas’ thought. “Or some other hunters can take care of it. Right now your top priority”
Cas cringed a bit by the loving look Dean gave him. He wasn’t sure he wanted to be Dean’s top priority.
