i don't know if i would say angel sacrificed himself to save the world from hell...i don't think he really knew what was going on--- i'd say that was more of a sacrifice on buffy's part than angel's part (since angel seemed surprised when buffy stook a sword through him and sent him to hell)

i think both sacrifices spike made were huge and dramatic gestures. the fact that spike fought for a soul in order to give buffy the love she deserves....that's huge. especially since we learned from angel's story that having a soul is actually a curse. for a creature who committed such horrendous crimes to then have a conscience and remember all the vicious murders he performed and to have to live with those memories every day....that's definitely a a sacrifice! and then for spike to tell buffy to go and save herself in the series finale while he was killed--- another huge and dramatic sacrifice!!

but the reason i chose angel (even though it's really hard to say which is a bigger sacrifice...) is because angel sacrificed his love and his freedom and his life for buffy. angel told buffy that she was the only woman he ever loved....and yet he took the courage and strength to end things with her in order for her to live a better life than he could ever provide for her. angel was not getting anything out of that deal...only buffy was. angel was giving up the one time he ever experienced love in his life in order for buffy to live a more fulfilling life....one in which she could walk in the day light, get married, have sex, have children, grow old with her husband...
angel was not getting anything good out of that deal- he was doing it purely out of his love and concern for buffy. it was a great sacrifice of love.
he sacrificed his life and his freedom when he gave up the chance to be human in order to save her life. (but i know that was on an Angel episode...not a BtVS one)
when he found out that buffy would die as a result of him being human- without hesitation he offered his life. angel was waiting years for some sort of redemption and he was given a chance to attain his every desire- to live as a human....he gave up his life, his freedom, and his dream all so that buffy would not experience an earlier death than intended.

but both angel and spike sacrificed soooooo much for buffy!!

Spike and Angel most defiantly sacrificed alot for Buffy for several different reasons for her wellbeing over their own.

sexyspike1 picked SPIKE ~ Got a soul for her :
Yes, how did Angel sacrifice himself? He didn't do anything or go through anything for Buffy. If anything, Buffy went through much more for him. All he brought her was pain-examples: draining her blood to keep himself alive, killing and hurting her friends as Angelus, and leaving her and breaking her heart at the end of season 3. I'm not saying Spike didn't hurt Buffy at all, but he sure made up for it by getting a soul for her and sacrificing himself to save the world. Die hard Bangel fans can claim Angel did more for Buffy, but really, everyone who has seen the show knows the truth.

Even though I am a Bangel fan, I do think that Spike did a huge sacrifice by getting a soul on his own will. I do think what Angel did by leaving her to have a better life was a big sacrifice as well, but what Spike did was much bigger.

Hostile_17 picked SPIKE ~ Got a soul for her :
spike got a soul on his own and saved the world for buffy, who could possibly love her more or top that? Angel was forced on a soul and buffy had to kill him on her own

acklesgirl87 picked ANGEL ~ Had to give her a new life as a Hero :
I am a die-hard Spuffy fan but I had to pick this option. Spike getting his soul back was a huge sacrifice. He wanted to be a better man for Buffy, even if it meant that he would suddenly have a conscience and have to live with all of the atrocities he had committed. I don't think he completely realised how much of a burden that would be. I also think that by getting re-ensouled, he was hoping Buffy would finally be able to love him. He was always desperate to get/keep Buffy. Angel was able to do the one thing that Spike wasn't. He let Buffy go. He wanted her to lead a more fulfilling life than she could have had with him, and though it hurt him to do it, he walked away from the one woman he had ever loved. He knew it would hurt her, but that she would eventually be able to move on with her life and find someone else, while he could never allow himself to get that close to someone ever again because of the curse. I think that was the most unselfishly motivated sacrifice either of them made for Buffy
